Gregtech is fun... but I don't see why people like the Bronze Age... I find that to be the only REAL downfall of the mod (a step in the wrong direction)
I don't care enough about efficiency for the bronze age to bother me.

Honestly, so far (I'm still going through GregTech 5) I'm loving pretty much all of it.

If you go into GT expecting the bronze age and the umm...."interesting"....ore gen, you'll be much happier. It's a far slower pace of play and it's definitely not for everyone. If you like switch packs often or quickly cycling through worlds, GT is not for you. But, if you want to take the time and build a world that will last weeks at the fastest and months for most people with RL commitments, GT is for you.

If you thought GT was slow in Ultimate and you liked that, you're in for a real treat with GT 5 (for MC 1.7.x).

Treat and GT should not be used in the same sentence *snip*.

But in all seriousness... the Bronze Age was a stupid addition if you ask me, I ALWAYS have to but in a workaround for it, because I hate the thing. Then there is the screwing with vanilla recipes... WHY! The ores are dodgy as hell... I really don't understand what is wrong with GT ores.
But the machines are cool :D

i couldn't have said it better, my friend. I've only done two(2) GT worlds so far (they take a long time !), but bronze age is my favorite as well. I think it's jump from vanilla MC to crude, but effective steam-driven machines that's so fun. I love the way the steam has to exhaust and it "whooshes" after every operation.

And, not all bronze age machine suck. The alloy smelter, compressor, and extractor have legs. We have used those well into the LV (32v) and even MV (128v) age.[DOUBLEPOST=1411649283][/DOUBLEPOST]

Reminds me of the people who yell at Reika for HLSA steel being so hard, yet they want the extractor, boring machine, and Fusion reactors. o_O

I do agree the bronze machines in GT 4 for MC 1.6 were incomplete. If you haven't already, give GT 5 a go. The bronze machines are much better integrated. There's more and improved steam producers and they bronze machines are faster. The Bronze Age in MC 1.6 wasn't fully fleshed out yet.

I don't mind most of the gregtech stuff but I think there should be some unwritten rules of modding:
1) Don't mess with vanilla items, leave them alone, no exceptions
2) Don't make it so starting out in your mod takes the p**s if your mod is supposed to be able to be used from get go (i.e. not an endgame mod, like KAMI)
3) Don't make your mod screw over other mods (GT is the WORST offender for this)
4) Have config options for everything (Mekanism, and other mods by the author is the worst offender, that I have been dealing with)
5) Don't make a mod that breaks the game (just a general rule, if a mod makes it so dirt is diamonds, for example, then it shouldn't be around)

I know I sound like a whiney little b***h BUT Greg took what was a good concept, and went over the line if you ask me.
I don't mind that it should take 50+ hours to get a super conductor, or whatever, but when it take an hour or so to get iron armour and iron tools, as you have to get an extra 8 pieces of iron on top of the double you need to make the plates... so 52(?) iron needed to get iron armour before you make a plate bending machine.... A LITTLE ridiculous

rules of modding
lolno

Alright, so lets just get rid of GT, TFC, BTW, MineTweaker, and many many modpacks then? Mod = modification. Modification = changing the game.
2) Don't make it so starting out in your mod takes the p**s if your mod is supposed to be able to be used from get go (i.e. not an endgame mod, like KAMI)
In all my GT worlds I get started with GT as fast as I do any other mods.
3) Don't make your mod screw over other mods (GT is the WORST offender for this)
What do you mean?
4) Have config options for everything (Mekanism, and other mods by the author is the worst offender, that I have been dealing with)
Wow really? Mekanism was amazing for configuration back when I last played it in 1.5.
5) Don't make a mod that breaks the game (just a general rule, if a mod makes it so dirt is diamonds, for example, then it shouldn't be around)
I don't really know what to say about this one :p

It is his mod. He can do what he wants with it.

1. haha, no. i agree with santa on this one.
2.that is the mod authors choice. if they want their mod to do that, then it is that kind of mod.
3.i see no problem with this. GT is a mod, where, it changes other mods to better fit with it. i say "ok", and get on with life.
4.more configs does = better, imo, but you should not be able to "turn off" important parts of the mod.
5.if your mod is balanced around dirt to diamonds, i am fine with it. i just label it, total conversion and get on my way.
and also "rules of modding" Hell. no.

5)I don't really know what to say about this one :p

6)It is his mod. He can do what he wants with it.
1) Minetweaker is a player chosen change. If the player thinks that <x> should be made like <y> then fine, go nuts. But I wouldn't want to play with something if <y> costs 3x as much as it would be in vanilla, and I wouldn't want that forced on me. I haven't heard of TFC so I can't comment. And BTW I would say is annoying, but the fact it doesn't work with other mods (at least from what I remember) means it could be let off, because it can't break rule 3.

2) With GT it sorta plays with rule 3, let's say I want to get an electric furnace pretty sharpish, which I can do once I had access to redstone with IC2 (as when you have redstone, you are bound to have enough iron), BUT GT says.. NOPE! you need these useless machines so you can make a ciruit. And these machines are gonna cost you a hell of a lot of bronze, and because I am Greg, I will nerf the recipe for Bronze :p

3) This is just due to core mechanics of a mod. GT adds plates, and forces you to use compressors for blocks, etc. So to make, let's say, an extrautils item transfer node, you need a redstone block. But to get a redstone block you need a compressor, and to get a compressor you need a circuit and to get a circuit you need... you see how the list goes on.

4) Yeah, Mekanism was a real arse to sort out with 1.7. I want to disable the cables from a mod pack as they are a little OP for energy conversion... but there is no config setting for them. So I had to get minetweaker to disable them.

5) I guess it's just something that I don't like. I don't mind if people have mystcraft ages with this stuff, as it takes time to get. But if I spawn in a world, punch a tree, get wood, and it drops diamonds instead of apples (this is probably a mod) then it is just forcing OPness onto a player. If you give people "endgame stuff" (if you are playing vanilla, with just that mod) then what's the point?

6)I know it's his mod. And I like his stuff... But Greg is really anal with his configs, so I would expect there to be "remove vanilla nerf" options, and "remove need for bronze age" as those redstone plate thingies are more annoying than anything else.

You could always ask in his thread about the missing config options. He and a lot of the other people in there are pretty helpful. He's not the ass everybody makes him out to be.

You're *really* not going to like GT 5, then. The ore gen is ... different. Expect to be using cobblestone and flint tools for *several* hours, if not longer. It's not uncommon for people to get unlucky GT 5 worlds and spend hours and hours in-game before they find iron. And, you really, really want to get lucky with Tin.

IMHO, it's all about expectations. If you set expectations really low and really slow, you'll be very happy with GT 5. But, if you expect it to be anything like Ultimate, you'll be extremely disappointed and frustrated.

Personally, I'm having a blast with Infitech2. There's plenty of other mods besides GT 5 such as Thaumcraft, Forestry, Railcraft, ExUt, eIO,
I sure hope we get a FTB pack with GT in it, I'd love to try it out again. This Bronze Age stuff sounds really cool and I don't remember any of that being in Ultimate.

We do,in a way. FTB has very visible support for 3rd-party public packs. Heck, even te wildly popupar AgS was a 3rd-party public pack.

Give Infitech2 a try. It's one of the best mod-packs I've ever played. @Jason McRay did a fantastic job.

I don't know how that one isn't launcher'd yet to be honest :p
