I've found that pouring for the casts depends on the material requirement for the recipe. The tier two tools require 8 ingots for the heads and in 0.8 I've been able to successfully craft casts only as long as I had enough ingots in the smeltery.

I think the bigger the tool head the more metal you need to craft the cast, which is funny because it should be the other waya round ( since all casts look the same size the amount of metal required should be the negative of the piece itself heh)

...Or the cast has a will of it's own and does some voodoo to make the lower teir material shapes hollow in the inside, and higher teirs have more dense and have more matter inside of them.
