That's.......

.....yeah, that's something I can definitely use. definitely.

Glad you like it. I think it's got a lot of versatility. Dunkurtin is right (that it might encourage spamming), so it should include a rule that most things only score points once. When something can score multiple times (like NPC houses), put a cap on it.

I still have a lot of work to do on the wood stage, but I thought I'd post a couple of progress screenshots. I'll have more later.

Damn I like that. Since I'm in the iron stage I may adopt your style using iron for the blade. I used the watermill for a grain mill but there's nothing wrong with having two water mill oriented technologies.

I'm planning on upgrading to iron grates later too. I'm glad you like the idea. And keep up the good work on your video series. :)

Something I've been toying with is both another form of Outlier and another Mechanic, that would be totally optional. That is: Rebellion/Discontent

Basically, as your city/kingdom grows bigger and bigger, you get more and more people that are unhappy with how you are running things. Discontent would start by seedy bars, no-tell motels, etc popping up, where those unhappy with your rule gather.

Eventually, the Rebels end up building their own Outlier, which could be anything from a hippy berry, tree-based commune to an armed, Fortification camp that is armed/defended to the teeth.

Conceivably, they could even form their own nation, and you could reconquer them to form your own Empire.

Would anyone be interested in something like this?

Sounds fun. I like it. The problem is, that would work pretty well on SMP, and possibly only with the custom NPCs mods. But waging war on people as you progress through technology?
Heck yeah, I'm in.

Yeah, it's definitely a hard thing for SSP. It's still at the concept stage atm, not sure how I'd pull it off, aside from the Outliers. :(

But as I'm moving forward, I'm finding myself using more and more reference from the Dwarf Fortress wiki for various things. It's not perfect, but it's a decent reference guide for me to use for new building types, jobs (Fisherdwarf, Farmer, Miner, Carpenter, Craftdwarves, etc) as I go forward.

Also, I'm making progress, even if a little slow, with the Redstone Discovery stage.

Got into a 1.5.2 server with some friends, school is picking up, and I'm playing EVE Online again, so updates will continue to be slow for a bit. But I will be working on getting it done.

I'm spending a bit of time working on revamping everything so far (Hovel hadn't had love in months :( ). Basically revamping everything with the last few months of rule changes. Also, I think I've finalized the stage order/names. Gold City comes after Redstone, and it lets you use Diamonds. Glowstone Expansion is next, where you move into the Nether. Then comes the Lapis Lazuli Stronghold, which is basically just another expansion stage, mainly in the Nether, I think. Then come two stages that I won't explicitly state what their crowning achievements are......the Emerald Kingdom and the Diamond Empire. The hints are in the main page's description, though. :p

As I was going through the Wiki's main page, I realized that I'd skipped something as far as plantations go:

Cactus and Sugar Cane/Reeds.

/facepalm

So yeah, those two crops will now be considered part of the Plantation branch of Agriculture, and will be retconned in as I go.

So, updated Pages:

Main Wiki Page

Dirt Hovel (What do you mean there's actually stuff to do now?)

Thanks Demeera for coming up with the idea for the Point system and Dunkurtin for helping refine the idea. For those of you who don't want to go there right now, what I'm using is this--the bare basics for advancing don't score any points. Doing extra stuff AFTER the requirements net you points.

From The Wiki said:
Points will not be balanced between the difficulties, so you can get the same amount of points in both Normal and Hardcore.

I've even incorporated my categories (in this case Residential, Fortification, and Agriculture) into it a little bit. Except that Fortification is all about punching things. Like 3 Points for killing Ender Tot/parents. or +1 if Creepers don't blow up your hovel. I may incorporate the killing mobs thing into the later stages, too. probably won't give points for item drops from mobs after this stage, though.

the new Dirt Hovel has 50 Possible Points. It WAS 49, but then I added the 6x6 point to make it an even 50 :p

No, by the time I'm posting Hardcore isn't done yet, but it (probably) will be (mostly) done by the time I wrap up for the night.

New (Totally Optional) Idea to help balance out Magic:

Shrines to Mod Makers, Mojang

basically, build shrines to the makers of mods, mod packs, livestreamers, Youtubers, etc. Came up with this as I was considering basically ripping more parts of Cubeaism than I have already wholesale (giving absolute credit to them) and placing them in the Challenge in Dirt Hovel to give Hardcore that extra edge to make it feel Hardcore compared to Normal.

Instead--shrines to mod makers, Minecraft well-known names (DW20, Docm, Ethos, etc), or people you play with. Exmples:

Bibliocraft Shrine to Nuchaz would be the only one to give you something--Printing Press, Typesetting Table
TC3 Shrine to Azanor
Beard Shrine To Jeb
Minecraft Shrine to Notch
Shrine to Server Owner for people playing on Servers
Etc.

I may even form my own Pantheons

Notch, head of the Mojang Pantheon (the greatest Pantheon)

The Yogscast Pantheon

Youtube Pantheon

DrZhark, patron of livestock and pets, etc.

Again, these would go under Magic, since they can be considered as "Deities" for making the mods that you play.

le sigh, the point total for Normal is coming down, because stupid me forgot how farming WORKS.

>.<

stupid mistake from far too many tool-using stages.

So atm the total stands at 42, but I'll add some here and there to raise it up to 45. Changes won't take effect until I hit Save with the finished Hardcore changes.

Also: Bonus points in Dirtcore for building 1-3 Hovels to go along with your Hut. These people will become the Elders in the Settlement.

:D

Revamping old rules rocks!

This new point system frees me up to do so much without going "Ssssss.......that might be a LITTLE much......."

.....as much....

:D

Clarified that dimensions are internal (not external) dimensions. ex: 2x2 means you can have a double chest, and 2 other blocks.

Hardcore also has a a challenge within a Challenge.......build a 5x5x2/4x4x2 interior dimensions hovel out of gravel or sand. Please don't spoil it for others once you figure it out. Yes, it IS possible in this stage, with one particular item.

Do Stone Saws from the Forge Microblocks use smoothstone?

If so, disregard the Stone Saw as craftable during Dirt stage. It's late, I want to finish, and don't want to wait for the mods to finish loading in the Minecraft client.

okay, so. Just finished. By my count, Dirt Hovel has 50 possible points, Dirtcore has 100. This was accidental. Originally Dirtcore had 101, Dirt Hovel had 42 (but ended up at like 47 after a couple tweaks), and did some point tweaking to end up with nice, even numbers.

I even managed to squeeze in every single category from later on--from Fortifications to Magic to Tech to even Outliers!

WOO!

That's how you revamp an old rules page!

There ARE mistakes in there "Stacks twice" where I meant "Stacks once" but I'm too damn tired to fix it tonight.

Keep in mind that I may still do some tweaking, mainly since I wasn't comparing the old rules page and the in-game books while I was doing this--may tweak this a little bit if there's something in the books I like.

And I will probably break the books up like this too.

ie: Dirtcore Source, Dirtcore Agriculture Source, Dirtcore Apiculture, etc.

Need to check and see if changing the name of the book in the Anvil and then Copying it in Bibliocraft will copy the extended name as well.

Also, added a Dr. Who reference

Mods page getting a revamp. No, this is not all of them, but I can't work on the wiki anymore. Between all the work I put in yesterday and the time I spent looking through all kinds of mods, I can't do it anymore today.

The purpose of this page is changing, from a "Mod pack", to a list of mods you might find neat. Some will be standard (TE, BC, IC2, etc), but also a few more esoteric (Somnia, Extra Doors, Tall Doors), and some that you may have never heard of before (CraftHeraldry, Sim-U-Kraft, Lost Books).

Basically this is a mod buffet--all kinds of mods, more than any reasonable computer could possibly run together. Take a look at them, pick which ones you want, leave the rest.

And yes, there are a lot more coming, especially Tech. I plan on putting all the UE mods up, all the "big" mods, etc.

After cutting down a Natura Redwood on a server that I play on, equipped with Longfall boots/TiC Lumber Axe, I have to say that I had forgotten how HUGE those things are.

So I'm thinking I'm going to make a 7 Pointer for the Wooden Settlement/Woodcore/Woodtrack:

Cut down a Natura Redwood without dying from the fall (dying to mobs while you're working on it is fine, getting shot/knocked/blown off the Redwood and dying from fall damage is not).

:D

Maybe that should even be higher, considering all you have is freaking WOODEN tools.

On the other hand, wood problems would dissapear for a good long while.

I found a couple of (what I assume to be) errors on the wiki.

First: You can go underground with no Y restriction in the Dirt Hovel, but gain one at Wood Settlement.

Second: I was working my way through Dirt Hovel's hardcore mode and and came to the agriculture section's kennel/stable sub-section. It's impossible to breed horses at the dirt stage for multiple reasons. There are no gold sources except for chest loot (at least that I am aware of), which is really REALLY rare. Also you can't craft Golden Apples or Golden Carrots in the dirt stage, they're not on the Unlocked Recipes list (that disallows breeding horses).

A similar problem to the gold for breeding is the saddles and/or leads which would be required to get the horses into some form of stable, though saddles are fairly common in chest loot. Leashes require green slimeballs (as well as not being craftable according to the Unlocked Recipes) which are difficult to acquire due to multiple random factors; such as if there are no slime chunks with surface-accessable caves or ravines that go to the required Y levels within a reasonable number of blocks, or no swamp biomes in a similar radius. Horses should probably be worth more points if you change the list to allow for the crafting of leads and/or the golden food items.

Thanks for making this challenge. I can see there is a lot here to keep me creating for some time! I have done a few practices to see how things pan out and I have started for real now. I will post some screenshots eventually to show my progress. The only thing I would change that I have seen so far is that I have spent a long time collecting enough clay to build the houses for the advanced requirements and I can see that I am going to have to replace them with wood for the next stage. I think I will leave them until the stone age and then just replace them with brick...
I've also allowed myself to build a 3-high house as long as I wear the helmet because 2-high houses annoy me.

I look forward to seeing how the point system progresses into the other ages too =)

Also, are mud helmets allowed? One could use them to bypass the leather helmet rule.

Not if you want to craft them during the Dirt Hovel stage, they're not on the Unlocked Recipes list. I personally think that mob-dropped armor is fine though, and any helmet can replace the leather requirement. No idea about Maul_Junior's opinion on the matter though

TomeWyrm--Thanks for that. I've still not gotten into horses, been distracted by oh so many other things. I've looked into this a bit more and will be making a modification, by taking out the breeding point, and wrapping that into the taming. After all, saddles, while common, are still RNG from loot chests. And there's no way to lure horses like other livestock >.<

not sure what to do about leads, etc. There's a golden lasso from Extra Utilities, and the MFR SAfari Nets, but those are still a ways down the road.....And here I thought all mobs could be made to follow you. >.<

And yes, the no Y restriction in the Hovel stage is most certainly an oversight.

I've also allowed myself to build a 3-high house as long as I wear the helmet because 2-high houses annoy me.

Which is precisely the reason why I wrote in the "Rule of Cool" :p

Mud armor--go for it. I'll add that in. And as far as dropped/found weapons in loot chests--anything goes (including Pokeballs--er, Safari Nets), except for gravity guns and portal guns. Those unlock in Redstone.

Working a bit on fluff atm, because I feel like it--taking the Cubeaism and developing my own ideas, for Pantheons:

The Velliper (Developer) Pantheon, with Notch the Bearded One, Jeb, etc

The Mo'Derians (Modders) Pantheon, with mDyio, SirSengir, Spacetoad, Eloraam, etc

The Ob'sirvian (Youtubers/Livestreamers) Pantheon, includes the U'Tubsian/Liv'River subcategories.

The names all look/sound similar if you squint your eyes just right and tilt your head, hop on one foot while reciting the "Nantucket" limerick at top volume at 3 AM in the middle of a I-Hop parking lot. Plus this lets me have a little fun for the folks that want to get REALLY into the RP aspect of Minecraft/the Challenge. If there are any out there.

Dirt Hovel is updated, with all of your suggestions in mind, tweaked here and there aside from that, and an entire section added at the beginning, before the actual rules, to try to help you form a cohesive building format that ties your entire civilization together.

So Thaumcraft 4 is out. I actually put together yet another 1.6 fun pack yesterday, with minimal mods. Aside from Forestry, Buildcraft, all I have are mods like Bibliocraft that don't really add any MAJOR mechanics, or mods that add new block colors (dyable beds, a mod that lets birch/spruce, etc wood affect the look of items, underground biomes, etc). I was thinking to myself how dissapointing it was not to have Thaumcraft for 1.6.

Then, today, Azanor released TC4.

YAY!

So now I have a little tech, a little magic, and a lot of aesthetics going for me as I head into another run of the challenge. And a lot of TC4 discovery.

I may even LP this time around.

Preliminary TC4 rules (before I even load up Minecraft)--hands off until Iron Village, then you can craft basic wands/Thaumonomicon.

Exception: If corruption starts being a problem, you are free to get into TC4 ASAP to deal with it.

I'll be updating Thaumaturgy specialization into TC4's separate Thaumonomicon categories (if needed, I think I'm basically there already)

I kind of like this idea, but it seems like the parameters for each "age" aren't defined all the way? Does everything just end at the Gold City?

Basically, yeah. It's still in development, and the starting ages get revised a lot more often than the upper ones get worked on.
