I found it at the floor of a ravine underground, about the same height that you start to find small redstone at.

Ahhhh good info :) I'll start to look around there. Still setting up my ebf at the moment, nickel had become a real issue because I've not found a vein of it and have been just getting the small ores I found when on mining trips.

For nickel you might want to get some thaumcraft transmutation going if you are desperate for it.

@everyone : Click me for information about which height ores spawn. (Click on the graphs)

Ahhh never really used thank craft but it is something id like to look into, thanks for giving me a reason to!

I saw that link, Aiwen posted it on the chat box on the dev website, very interesting and useful! Was a good read hope more content is added

Ravines are still your friend, but only if you rendered your world with extrabiomes.
For some reason the ravines that got rendered in my BOP world, even the ones pretty far underground were absolute garbage.
Do yourself a favor though, dont process it all in one go - like previous versions of GregTech it does contain platinum - if youre lucky enough you will find it in a vein of Cobaltite / Ganeierite, process the Ganeierite - the reason i say this is because platinum still seems to be used in high-end electronics and platinum seems to be a byproduct of washing nickel, but only nickel - much like the old elite circuit boards and the nano saber, it also does 8192 GT cables, but im sure in the circumstance of the latter that there is something far far cheaper than platinum for cables :p

There are also Nickel and Platinum bees. Finding Nickel ore is much faster, but if you already have the other, similar bees, the Nickel and Platinum ones come soon after.

Im guessing i cant use a basic fluid extractor to make liquid glass?
And upon a closer inspection it seems the thermionic fabricator is still craftable, but it dosnt work ... consumes energy though -_-'

Edit: wait, this is running forestry on hard mode, right? - so that means i need 8mj/t to run the bloody thing anyway, dosnt it?

Yes it does :)

But well... Thermionic Fab can seize to work. I thing i saw a GT machine for producing Electron Tubes, but I might be mistaken - CONFIRMATION NEEDED

That would be the assembly machine, and as i found out i need to make it to medium voltage in order to melt glass seeing as how it needs 40eu/t.

@Jason McRay
Did inventory tweaks get updated between 1.1.2 & 1.1.4?
Ive come to realize that it was what caused the huge gui/inventory and chest lag i was getting playing 1.1.2, yeah, im lazy and i dont want to go fiddling around with script files so im still running 1.1.2 :p

Edit: And i may just of realized that im a special kind of stupid, i disabled BOP ... is that why the script was wigging out on me when i tried to use 1.1.4?

You can check the changelog to see if it got updated.

And yes if you disabled BoP, script will be derping out. But you can still have BoP enabled with EXBXL. It will work just fine. In future update 1.1.5 i left EXBXL enabled, so they will always generate and if you also want BoP generated you only need to enable it during starting new worlds.

Got serious about making Ethanol this weekend. Was surprised at the results of the various ways to turn Ethanol into power. Here's a summary:

Code:
GT Steel Boiler --> RC Steam Turbines : 48k EU / bucket
GT Basic Diesel Generators : 100k EU / bucket
Forestry Biofuel Generators : 128k EU / bucket
RC HP (Steel) Boiler --> RC Steam Turbines : TBD, but should be the highest @ 174k EU / bucket*

*According to the RC Boiler Calculator, the RC boiler --> RC Steam Turbine *should* yield 174k EU / bucket, but I'm still waiting for my steel boiler to heatup to 1000c before I start my test.

For my test setup, I converted everything to IC2 EU and measured using an MFSU that was empty to begin with. Converting from GT EU to IC2 EU was slightly lossy since I was using 1 EU/meter loss cable from 1 to 2 meters away from the transformer and didn't place the Diesel Generators directly adjacent to the GT Transformer. My setup was made for compactness. A more efficient setup might be 5% more efficient.

Ones that I didn't test that I know are less efficient than the above are:
  • GT Bronze Boiler : less efficient than Steel
  • GT Steam Turbines : *much* less efficient than RC Steam Turbines
  • GT MV and HV Diesel Generators : less efficient than Basic Diesel Generators
I was surprised at how inefficient the GT Steel Boiler is compared with its own diesel generator. I thought for sure converting to steam and then using the efficient RC Steam Turbine would be better, but it's not. One thing going for the GT boilers is their extremely short heat-up times and their compactness. A single GT Steel Boiler puts out approximately 1200 mB steam / tick whereas an RC 36 HP puts out 720 mB steam / tick. GT Steel Boilers make for great on-demand/dynamic steam.

Why is this important ? Well, with Forestry HARD mode (the Fermenter is insanely expensive to run : 17MJ/t * 4x = 68 MJ/t = 170 EU/t !) and with the high cost of making biomass and then distilling into biofuel, the GT Steel Boiler is very much net energy negative, even with the best possible saplings and with golems harvesting the saplings !! By comparison, golems chopping and re-planting trees to make charcoal is very much net energy positive, and it requires a far, far simpler setup : just eIO Alloy Smelter and eIO Generator.

Since I had spent a week in RL getting super saplings to replace charcoal and given how much more infrastructure is required for Ethanol vs. Charcoal, I dialed back the insane Forestry HARD mode settings from 4x power consumption to 2x power consumption (in comparison, NORMAL is 1x) and restored the Ethanol nerf from 0.5x and HARD mode to 1.0x like NORMAL mode.

Also, the GT Refinery converts biomass to ethanol at a ratio of 10 biomass to 3 ethanol (10:3 = 3.3:1), whereas the Forestry Still does it slightly less lossy at 3:1. With Forestry set to 2x power consumption, the Forestry Still and the GT Refinery use about the same amount of power (using 5 EU / 2 MJ) to make 1 bucket of Ethanol.

Final verdict is still out. Still more testing to do.

My desired goal is the same-size tree farm using the best possible saplings with water should yield approximately the same power Ethanol vs. Charcoal. The *total* output of the tree farm, should one continue to convert wood to charcoal, is thus doubled when compared to charcoal only.

Higher output should be achievable with fruit juice providing a 1.5x boost in the Fermenter. At the least, the squeezers and the Forestry multifarm to harvest the fruit should *not* be net energy negative when compared to water.

One may ask : why did I spend a week in RL to make a super sapling when charcoal is so easy ?

Why, to explore Binnie's new mod, of course ! His Genetics machines have been completely re-designed. There are more of them, the process requires far more times, far higher quantity of resources, but far less energy. It's also more "realistic", IMHO, with all the intermediate liquids and solids needed to do the genetics work.

Binnie seems to prefer complex / long infrastructure over high energy costs or 'rare' materials. In other words, he's guaranteeing that in any mod-pack, you will need to spend significant time in his mod to reap the rewards. He's also not short-cutting any Forestry mechanics. There is no breeding in his mod : just isolating, combining, and imprinting of traits into drones or pollen. This is the opposite of easy-mode mods like Gendustry.

For bee breeding, I highly recommend Metabolic Frames to get at least 1 hybrid drone of the new species. Then, to purify, Oblivion Frames if you can find/get them. If not, use Necrotic Frames from MagicBees to purify. Indeed, Metabolic + Oblivion is far faster and easier than Binnie's Genetics machines.

I had the exact same issue, it does work Jason confirmed he didn't do anything to alter it. The way I got I working was to make an enderIO capacitor to store RF the use that to power the thermionic fab which does work. It's the fact that it needs a s**t ton on energy to make it work.

I've now got a full size forestry farm powering itself and creating a nice overflow of charcoal for me. The farm is totally self powered but don't forget you need apitite ore to create fertiliser. I wish there was a more 'renewable way of making fertiliser
