1.6 goning to be released 12:00 pt time

I still say two weeks for the first few mods to be updated. Cpw and crew are normally fast to get forge updated with releases.

So two weeks for the first mods.
Four for the first modpack updates
And I'll say 36 hours before the first "1.6 is out, how come..." threads appear.

So, how exactly are jar mods dead?

Looks like installing mods on 1.6 is pretty much the same as with 1.5, just need to add the profile to the launcher.

I've not looked too heavily into the 1.6.1 release, yet, but from my understanding, the conflict between jarmods like BetterThanWolves and Forge has more to do with several mods trying to rewrite the same Java MineCraft-vanilla-basic class (and sometimes method) in contradictory ways. Moving to binary patches won't really change that, as long as the underlying conflict remains. It might be theoretically possible to overwrite both the Forge /and/ BTW versions into some cross-compatible result. I'm not sure it'd be any easier than modifying the class files is today, though, and doing so without violating copyright may not be possible.

((And that's ignoring the politics of the situation.))

I don't see anything in 1.6.1 that BetterThanWolves will have particular difficulty adjusting to, outside of the time investment in compatibility with resource packs / new MCP names.

It remains possible, but manually doing so (or using programs like MultiMC to do so) should be far less necessary, including for Forge itself, due to the system automatically creating things. CPW says that the next version of Forge will be acting from a binary patch method, instead of manually inserted files with duplicated source code.

Vanilla already had minecarts and dropper towers for moving stuff around quickly in 1.5. Good luck taking a horse safely down into a mine and back out again. I'm sure they'd be great for aimlessly wandering around in vanilla, but flying will always be better for that (avoiding mobs and crossing water easily is a fairly big deal).

I like that there's performance improvements, but we've had that in ftb for awhile now. I understand why some modders chose to wait, but the vast majority didn't.

I think you missed my point. I did say flight is preferable in most situations. But horses are still a useful addition to the game as they can be found and utilised long before you have the necessary resources to build a jetpack. And if you had to cross a section of land (with no large bodies of water) a horse would be the superior option as it is much faster. Mobs are not really a concern when you can just blitz by them.

As for minecarts, they serve a different purpose. Minecarts are mostly for getting from point A to point B, and transferring items across long distances using chest minecarts. A big disadvantage they have is that they require setup in the form of laying tracks. Horses do not require any setup process, and they can travel at approximately the same speed as a minecart on powered rails. If anything, it's minecarts that have now become less useful.

Jenkins builds are released, but I would wait till the rest of the features are ready for end users. The current stuff is so modders can start pushing whatever they will need to change for the current update.

"Jenkins" is just the name of a genericable build server, in this case, they're refering to the jenkins.minecraftforge.net server. However, this requires a login, and the code on it is /not intended for normal users/. It will not work well, may not work at all, and often will have significantly more complicated use instructions than the final release.

And, again, very, very few if any Forge-based mods will work without an update specific to 1.6.1, due to changes in the Minecraft code and in how texture/resource packs work.

Having it right now won't do you any good. There's actually nothing you could really do with mods to use with it. That's what people keep saying. Just be patient. You aren't missing anything.
 
A version's been released to the Forge File Server, but outside of the Iron Chests mod, nothing's been updated for it, and please note that this is a fairly early release and will likely have bugs on top of the normal issues.
