Wiki's can be wrong. I've intentionally only played on hard and hardcore difficulties since beta 1.8.X and never died to hunger, myself. Worth pointing out the source for dying from hunger is from a beta twitter post from before I played, and has most likely been changed since.

You don't die from hunger on hard mode, you just go to half a heart.
