Downgrade, to 2.84 or 2.85. I don't believe that 2.9 works with 1.4.7. (Works like a champ for 1.5.x though.)

Like Dave mentioned up thread, the only real issue is no angry zombies (or tconstruct slimes, at least that i've noticed) but if you're not using Thaumcraft it's not really an issue.

Hmm... he shouldn't need the JDK just the JRE. The launcher seems to be running fine, which would indicate that Java is indeed installed correctly (Although, if I remember correctly Ubuntu by default installs the OpenJDK version, not the Oracle version. So there may be a version conflict)...
