    if you have plenty of space: standard cobblestone. you'll need at least 10 layers, make it 12-15 to be on the safe side, this way it is quite bulky... but it will contain the explosion.

    as I wrote, take a look at crushed obsidian. twice the blast resistance of vanilla obsidian (obsidian has a little nerf to make reinforced stone/glass more valueable).

    my bases are always underground, so the biome doesn't really matter. extreme hills are nice because of emeralds, and in my current world, I have a base in tundra (dirty-brown and dead) next to a highlands biome (equally to extreme hills, with emeralds).

    yes, those are natura redwood trees. so, to grow one of them, you need the sapling of this one. BOP or EBXL or forestry redwood saplings don't work (funny, if there are several redwood saplings, and one of them dwarfs the rest).
