Please try the steam boiler in single player first so you get an idea of just how hard it is to keep it warm. My advice early on is to dig under your base and pray you find a big lava pool to pump up for magmatic engines into an redstone energy cell. That's what I use :)

This might sound silly, but I fill my reds tone energy cell to full, then whack it with the omni wrench (no energy loss) and then set it down directly next to the quarry until it runs out. The quarry runs at 100 MJ speed the whole time. Then I go recharge it.

Don't forget the newfangled emerald conductive pipes! Wooden conductive is so Jurassic.

What is the advantage of daisy chaining? I just run extra conduit if I need more engines filling my cell.

I don't know about the max piston speed of electrical engines, but their MJ output is variable from 1 MJ up to 14 depending on which tubes you install.

I only play Mindcrack with zero edits to the config (hard mode). I should for a full set of thermal expansion gear before ever using any EU based tech. I tried a full factorization ore setup in creative that was semi automated and it was just not for me (no processing of exotic ores)

I got sick of my old pyramid and I felt it was too small. I told the server to delete those chunks and I started from scratch keeping nothing.

I think you have pretty much listed the best options already. The only thing I am not sure of is if thaumcraft has an option. I like the high speed rail. It is buggy and needs to go straight and level to go full speed, but it is surprisingly easy to make.
