I believe they only spawn one wisp of you kill it , it won't spawn anymore I'm not 100% sure if It does anything to existing nodes or aura tho

It's an alter . The chest has goods inside. Wisp will spawn when you get close by it. You can also make a node with the obsidian totem poles later on in tc3 research
