With reactors, is it even useful to use fission reactors or should I just try to go straight to fusion?

Why is it a bad idea to allocate over 4gb's of ram? What are the upsides and downsides? I have currently allocated 8 gigs of ram to my launcher and 4 to my server. What are the downsides of going over 4gb on the client or even server?
