It's not a bug. It is to keep NEI from being so many pages. It hides duplicate items. Not sure where the setting is to change it back or why you would want it. Too many pages in NEI cause lag when you open it.

Garage doors from Carpenter blocks. You can make them fairly large and put any block on them you want. Everything else is either a normal door or very late game stuff like etheral glass.

Getting steel from mobs dropping chainmail armor is a easy way to get steel without building a railcraft blast furnace in packs like Infinity or DW. I got stacks of it from a small cursed earth setup. I agree it isn't really worth it for the other more common metals.
