It isn't being thrown down the drain. All the work is continuing, literally the only thing that'll change is the launcher (which will become a client) and probably the name. Modpacks will still be made, a client/launcher/thing will still exist, I'd expect the store to continue as well...

I think the Curse client either already has horizontal scrollbars, or wraps text :P I'd hope there's a final release for the FTB launcher, just to patch up the bugs that have been discovered.

Make sure it was stated at that time by an FTB modpack creator, who at this time is still an FTB modpack creator. This is important, if they were actually FTB modpack staff and are still making modpacks, then chances are it's still on the table (save incompatibilities with other mods).
