I usually start with endoflames myself. I don't tend to automate them as i use them as a stepping stone for the more fun-to-automate flowers.

there is another way of getting ore, well 3 ways that are very similar and all automatable. Lens of the Miner from Actually Additons, Botania's Orechid and the Astral sorceey ritual can all convert stone to ore. it's personaly how i'm getting all my ore atm in my playthrough.

Yeah they are lossy, but pretty much everything aside from fluxducts and the Draconic Evolution system (with any decent throughput) has some loss. The higher tier Laser relays do have higher loss %wise than the lower ones, but iirc it's a set loss regardless of distance, not per hop.
