I think the 1.5.2 beta packs have different IDs so they are not backwards or forwards compatible. I think the 1.6 packs will be mostly backwards compatible but there may be some problems, I think involving liquids.

If the tools break it stops altogether. I don't think there is a built in way to stop it when the tools are about to break. You could maybe try stopping it automatically after a certain amount of time or having a turtle remove the tool and compare it to another one or something?

Does stone work? In recent versions of thermal expansion stone in the igneous extruder doesn't need lava, only water. If you aren't on that version then probably just feed cobble into a furnace. EDIT: If not, how about pulverizing it into sand or even smelting that into glass. I'm just making...

I think this might be what you need.

It can feed sideways and changes its appearance when it does. It can't feed up but the dropper can. The dropper can't extract from an inventory though.

If you replace the chest with a non configured ME Interface it works even better. Interfaces automatically send items in them that they aren't configured to have in them to the network.

Only one piece of glowstone dust which you can get easily even quite early. I think there are uncraftable lux capacitor items in NEI so at some point the lux capacitor module on the tool will probably shoot those.

Have you changed any gregtech configs? Maybe DoctorOr is right and somehow both recipes are disabled.

Would it be impractical to include all three versions? That would give people choice to use whatever version they want.
