I've decided that I want to a bit of silk touch automining, which is why i'm aiming to get an arcane bore. I've tried it out in a test world and it seems pretty good. However, i'm worried that my tools might break while its going, so it won't be silk-touching them anymore. Is there a way to somehow automatically shut it off before they break?

If the tools break it stops altogether. I don't think there is a built in way to stop it when the tools are about to break. You could maybe try stopping it automatically after a certain amount of time or having a turtle remove the tool and compare it to another one or something?

As I recall (it's been a while since I used it), the Bore requires both the wand and the pick in order to function. It also won't break them. I think it stops just at the breaking point, meaning that you can repair the tools, or they can repair themselves if they have the enchant.

It does indeed need both a mining wand and a pickaxe. I'm about to set up a test world to see if this is the case(the stopping bit, I mean).

Well, ive played with the arcane bore for a bit. Its pretty quick, but it doesn't clear out all the blocks within its radius like I thought it would. It just destroys a seemingly random selection of blocks and then stops. Is there a way to make it destroy all blocks in its range?

I waited. It eventually had a hole to bedrock. A clean one, except for the edges. Also I may need to use a different test zone. Tundra's aren't very deep, so the tools were barely scratched. Plus there was all those caves...

You can point it down? How, when you have to attach it to the base? (Unless the base can be placed on walls, which I haven't tried).

I placed the bore head on the bottom of the base. It aimed down.
The base is just a block, it can even float in mid air if you need it to. The bore head has to be attached to the base, and I placed mine on the bottom so it aimed down.(I stuck the base against some leaves because I was lazy and didn't want to have to use the Angel Block to position it)
