There is a pulling upgrade for ic2 machines, but I think the sorting machine takes only one kind of upgrade--and not that one. But I'll look at that again. Yeah, at least the eject upgrade can be set by shift-clicking the side of a block. I would imagine the pull upgrade would be the same.

No hopper anywhere near. Nothing to pick up items of any sort. And yes, the cauldron is only about three blocks away, so no range issues there. I haven't got an arthana yet, so I'll look at adding that and see if it helps.
