You have to set up about 20 of them to actually cover a decent area since they only pick up things that hit their block space. Also, because of how they work, you have to put them in a grid pattern which can often times miss an item if it hits the bottom.

I don't use them because if I move at all I get a massive screen tear, whether I'm using vsync or not. I would actually use them if they didn't have an animation.

That's a good idea for designing a base. Make it really easy to expand, like what you've done there. By making a small flat circle-based house like that, you can easily just add another circle to it when you need more room. Looks awesome, by the way.

Did you accidentally delete the default texture pack? This seems irrelevant to texture packs, as a texture pack shouldn't do anything until you enable it. Are you sure it's not something else causing the issue?

Not really possible without some kind of camera mod. And if you do get a mod like that, it'll lag the crap out of your server because it'll be running essentially 20 fraps' at the same time. You can always search peoples homes and search their character for the stolen items.
