    Is this cave normal?

    I think there's a line in the code that makes sure that caves can't run parrallel to eachother. They are quite common, you're just pretty unlucky with your mining. Not common, but decently common. There tends to be lots of ores in those big caves, by the way. Especially near bedrock.

    It's vanilla. I dunno when it was added, 1.4.7 I think. Huge massive caves. There are also small 'hubs' that are little structures that spawn in the ground and connect cave systems. Not as big as that cave though. You can't get those caves in the end or in the nether I don't think...

    Two tall. Check for yourself, it's two. There are two types of obsidian totems I think. I had two types in a chest, and the construct wouldn't activate if I built it with just one. One is the head of the totem I think, and the other is the base. Might be changed though to only be one type.

    Yes, and it's also quite laggy and isn't hidden easily. You'll need atleast one piece of redstone out in the open for a door larger than a 4x4. If you manage to actually do anything large with vanilla pistons then I applaud you. Even if it means using RP2 to compress the gates and logic.

    No. It makes the transparency black, whatever you do. I think it was possible a long time ago but not now.
