The item tesseract (some of them) are receiving items and sending them to the Router. The router is putting items into the machines. You need to look up Router and watch videos on that - it's what you're missing.

If Ars Magica is in play, you can use firebolt at the portal and it'll work. There's also the skylands way ... put wood near the portal and occasionally fire will spark over to the portal and light it for you.

Playing on single player or multi player server? (I know that it can be disabled in servers)
