Ran into an issue where steel is all but impossible to achieve. To get steel, I need to build a blast furnace; to build a blast furnace, I need netherrack; to get netherrack, I need to visit the nether; to visit the nether, I need to open a nether portal; to open a nether portal, I need flint and steel; to get flint and steel, I need steel.

Two potential paths:
1) find a naturally generated chest with steel within it. This means extremely dangerous dungeon diving, which I'm kind of scared of considering I'm stuck with iron armor until I can get to the nether to collect glowstone dust to build a nano suit.

2) build a portal to the twilight forest, and find a tower to collect netherrack from to build a blast furnace.

3) as per grydian2, by adding a pulverizer+rolling machine, you can assemble a gregtech blast furnace.

Anybody else playing with the beta+gt? Got ideas?

I believe you could use the gregtech industrial blast furnace to make steel. You could make the most basic one with 34 standard machine casings. Its annoying but possible.

Aye, the casings could be made simply. But the blast furnace block requires multiple instances of gold dust, carbon fibre, and then either a steel casing, a titanium casing, or another advanced machine block (more glowstone dust ie gold dust+redstone dust). Not really a possibility when climbing the tech tree from punching trees.

Advanced machine block uses nothing from the nether... IE coal dust is overworld, copper tin and refined iron is overworld. The copernickle heating coil is annoying but you can make it with a rolling machine in the overworld. IMO this is just another way that greg is taking things away from other mods (railcraft blast furnace) and forcing you to use his more expensive version... IE the industrial blast furnace.

I ended up finding a block of steel in a chest cart in an abandoned mine, which I was then able to put in the furnace and collect steel ingots from.

As far as the gregtech blast furnace- you still need a macerator to get coal dust, which requires an advanced circuit which requires glowstone dust, which either requires going to the nether or gold dust... which requires a macerator.

If I didn't want the GT hardmode recipes, I would have disabled them. Its a fun puzzle in my opinion, which is why I'm playing it. There are plenty of other threads to discuss how GT is or isn't destroying FTB, but this thread is about steel. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

make a fire charge. thaumcraft adds them blaze flowers, kill a creeper, cook up wood or get coal.
Can also find them in jungle temples

If Ars Magica is in play, you can use firebolt at the portal and it'll work.
There's also the skylands way ... put wood near the portal and occasionally fire will spark over to the portal and light it for you.

To get to the nether you only need to set the portal on fire, this is easy. Get a bucket, build your portal with either surface lava or underground lava pools by placing the lava then using water on top of it to turn it into obsidian. Put a crafting bench next to where you'd normally light the portal. Surround the crafting bench with cobble, don't obstruct where the portal opens. Place lava underneath the crafting bench. The portal will now light itself without having to obtain steel.

All that being said, I usually find steel well before I go to the nether via steel implements or armor found in blacksmith chests in villages or thaumcraft mounds. Some villagers will also trade emeralds for flint & steel. Also, you can make mystcraft ages from paper (3 sugarcane) & leather (cows) and find the netherack page to make an age that has it. There's also a nether fortress page for netherbrick & soul sand.

What I do is set up a trench behind where I want the portal with some lava in the trench and wood above the lava. Lava sets wood on fire, fire ignites portal.

Has nobody else played skyblock but me?

Being able to light a nether portal without flint and steel is trivial.

Holy crap, these are brilliant. This is exactly what I was looking for, thanks!
