It's still not the easiest thing. Most people don't have more than a stack of diamonds until they're around a week into their world. Which is awhile, considering it's unlikely that you'll have enough time/interest to play for more than six hours a day.

A mod list would be nice. Most things work under the rules of "If it works well SSP, it'll work even better SMP". I would suggest you try it and see how it goes.

The gravel is meant to be mined with a shovel, and it only spawns aboveground. It's added by Tinker's Construct. So you can remove that from the list. And rock hives are meant to be mined with a scoop, not a pickaxe. Remove those too. It's just killing bees, and the miner gets nothing in...

10/10. You're not posting as much as you used to, Technician. And you've also had Nose's avatar the longest, out of everyone that got one.

Considering it costs 2 diamonds per 4 (or maybe 6, I haven't played FTB for awhile) pieces of cabling, it's not broken until you get to the stage where you're building houses out of diamond blocks. Until then other choices are viable.

Or HV cables. Or uninsulated cables, and wire it up to an extremely inefficient mob trap. Or extreme LV cables. Or MV cables. Or a line of batboxes/MFEs/MFSUs. Or run it through a transformer to prevent energy loss.

The lag shouldn't be too bad, considering you only need water on the top layer. I heard something ages ago about empty space causing more lag than liquids or blocks, although that information might be outdated.
