I made a quarry world on our unleashed server specifically for quarrying. Hence the name :D. However I was not able to make it without some lava in the cave systems so my question is; Should we drain the water out of our quarries when we are done or does it not matter as far as server performance goes leaving the water in them?

I think it's better to leave the water there, since if you try to drain the water you will lag the server pretty bad..

The lag shouldn't be too bad, considering you only need water on the top layer.

I heard something ages ago about empty space causing more lag than liquids or blocks, although that information might be outdated.

I think he's talking about all the updates. If you are running a full sized quarry with minimal number of water blocks, that's still 64 iirc. Then all the subsequent blocks that the water has spread to (64x64) and everything below.

A simpler solution might be to use a filler and have the filler replace all the blocks, including the water source blocks, with something else. It'll also prevent leaving giant holes in your world.

As long as the old quarries are not chunk loaded while the new ones work, it won't make a difference what you do with them!

But the filler will stop as soon as it hits any monsters. So if there are any bats/other things down there you won't get far with that.

(That might be fixed, I had this problem like 4 months ago)

Just so you know leaving the water there should have no impact. As it has no reason for the water to update once the quarry is done.

Removeing it will cause some temp lag as it drains but once emty it will also be a non issue.

So it is really up to you there is little harm either way other then some temp lag. And since this is a mining world you have no real reason to cover, clear, or fill the quarry hole since no one is going to build in that area anything more then some qaurrys.

I usually mine around my base in the overwold, after the quarryring' is done, i tidy the place over with fancy stone brick and build a huge energy production base. The thing is.... back in older versions or with tekkit, i used a nice item from EE2 that evaporates all water blocks a number distance from you.
Now i just go over the place with dirt and replace all the water. A tedious job....
Does anyone know a better way to do this?

Just put a few bees with freezing effect over the top, and let it stew.

But really the lag of water in a quarry is client side except after initial update of the water. Also, the lag of cleaning up the water is entirely temporary. So in the end, it's your choice.

How do you "drain" water? It's gonna create source blocks as soon as you do.

You replace the source blocks of water with something else till all source blocks are gone and the water level starts dropping.

Here's an awesome way of dealing with water replacement I found the other day. Take a cooling wand and hold down right click on the water and it will slowly turn every block in a large radius into ice. Next, take a Wand of Equal trade (preferably with potency) and use it to switch all the ice blocks for dirt or what have you.

Also, the thing you read about empty spaces causing more loading was probably in relation to the old xycraft crystals. It was related to lighting them because they were empty blocks surrounded by 6 walls which meant 6 spaces that need lighting for every crystal spot. A quarry would likely only have 5 walls for the entire quarry and even then it would only affect the server if it was actually loaded which wouldn't be often if its an old quarry in a different age.

filler should get the job done
