because machines and wiring fit better in boxes not to mention almost all items you can place down in the game are also boxes, so it just fits well together

meh, it wouldn't work to well because of the stupid vanilla repair system. and people would just uninstall the modules and reinstall them on a new suit, which is pretty tedious
