Had a similar experiance, my whole village slowly got taken over by assassins.

I noticed its only the villagers that are left outside and not blocked into their houses (by me). Most of the assassins are dead... they dont do anything but stand there so they get killed at night by mobs.

I had just hit my iron tier, so all iron items. I had lots of wood, coins, and cobble. I think it was either tree spirit or the horse with the wings looking thing (i cant remember the name)
