In fairness you have to play vanilla to play mods.
It is still frustrating. Watching someone like SkyDoesMinecraft explain mods is hell IMO
Then there is yogscast or DW20 that actually know what they are doing (and in yogscast case muck around for fun and pretend they have no idea what is going on)

That's not exactly true. Look at Direwolf.
I'm sure even DW started with Vanilla, because logic.

I haven't played Vanilla in a long time, beyond a brief dip into 1.7 to see what was new, but I have a very long history with it before I met a couple of guys who introduced me to modded MC.

That was my first major project, and probably the one I'm still proudest of, inside and out; finished (solo, by hand) November 2011, at least on the outside. One entire internal floor is devoted to an indoor garden and fields, and half the bottom is storerooms.

But by the way DW plays, you would think he barely spent a day on vanilla before proceeding to modded.

Heh, I'm like that now. On the new server, my friends are just up to alumite tools and settling down in a permanent place. I have 2200 diamonds =P

I dunno. He's actually really good with a bow (which in mods he never, never uses) and decent at parkour. He could just be a talented gamer in general though.

That problem was resolved already in this very thread. Plus watching a vanilla player explain mods is frustrating.
I didn't see that it was "resolved" - someone said it worked, someone else said it didn't work. Seeing it on a video finally proves it. Or was netmc talking about a different staff? I know nothing about staves.

I only played vanilla for about 10 minutes before moving on to mods.

Hey! Etho's the one who actually got me interested in modded minecraft in the 1st place! Of course, that was back in 1.4.7 before the Mindcrackers abandoned FTB for the updated vanilla minecraft. It does feel weird to be more advanced at this point than many of the youtubers I watch.

We did describe in other threads if not this one exactly what Etho showed. There is another staff, the staff of the primal, that can't be made with thaumium caps (at least not without an ichorium wand), that may have been adding to the confusion. The staff of the primal combines all the other staves into one, giving you a staff that can hold 250 vis and regenerate 25 vis of all 6 primal aspects, but you can't get the big vis usage discount for the thaumium caps & have to settle for the smaller discount provided by silver caps.

Okay, here's an on topic question:

I'm really new to the whole Thaumcraft mod, due to the burning hate I had for the research from previous versions that I played. Now I'm finding it a joy to play with this mod, but I'm having an issue with Infusion Crafting.

After doing some research (and moving my cauldron over 12 blocks away from the Altar Matrix) I have what seems to be the typical set up of the Matrix in the middle with sets of two altars on each side.

(M being Matrix, and a being altars)
(I'm bad at ASCII so please feel free to laugh)

Code:
    a a
a a
      M
a a
  a a

(add in symmetrical Zombie Head and Candle placements below, not shown)

I'm trying to do the Silverwood Rod infusion. Silverwood has 7 outer components. Everything I've read states the items need to be placed symmetrical to avoid... errors.... How do?

Do I remove the altars from one side and place a single one in the "middle"?

I have attempted to do this infusion 3 times so far and every time something goes horribly horribly wrong.

Help?

No. Keep as many items opposite each other as you can, just leave one pedestal empty. Set up a hopper with a spare item in pointing at each pedestal, and a dirt block to overwrite flux goo with plus a shovel to remove it with after. Add more candles, crystals, etc. for more stability. And make sure you have PLENTY of aspects, as it uses more of you take time to fix the pedestals.

hrmm... hadn't thought of using hoppers to replace knocked off items.. I'll have to try that.. I'm guessing the hoppers don't affect the process? or the dirt they pace if there's taint?

The Hoppers are to replace any items that fall off of the pedestals, which makes using hoppers really smart for infusion. Cuts down on wasted infusion time.
Works even better if you place a hopper with a chest above it, both filled with the needed item.

Yes, hotbar. That way you can place the dirt to get rid of the taint, and then use the shovel to pick the dirt back up.
