I have the ability to update to windows 10 if I want. I know that there is a Windows 10 MC.

If I move to windows 10, Does that mean I am only able to use this Win10 MC or can I use the same old mc/ftb/curse setup?

In short, would anything have to be different if I moved to Windows 10?
 
No, you can still use everything you have on your PC now on Win10 (unless you have apps which have been confirmed to not work, which I haven't heard of any yet)

The Windows 10 version is a ported MCPE, basically. The Java version you're used to has more features and can support mods.

As of now, Win10 MC can't support mods, but Lex Manos did talk to Microsoft and they said that they want to make it moddable.

Cool stuff... MCPE is great for creative... much better than conventional. MCPE is terrible at survival though.

The main difference: "Modded MC" is written in Java.

All other versions, including "Win10 MC beta" (MCPE) are written in C++.

The advantages:

  1. Right now people with a valid Mojang license can get "Win10 MC" for free, with the same update policy as existing MC. Log into your Mojang account for details. Later it will cost $4.99, $9.99 if it's your first license.
  2. Right now up to 8 players can connect as a LAN if they have an xbox or a Win10 PC.
  3. Eventually, through the various platform updates, all versions of MCPE will be able to join a server and play together regardless of device (Realms will probably come first)
  4. At the point that #3 occurs all MCPE versions will support the same features... basically a single code-base.

I personally don't expect any serious work on modding until this point is reached.

The disadvantages:
  1. No compatibility with Java MC
  2. Many mod devs are... reluctant to start working in C++, probably from experience with Mojang changing things up so often.

So Win10 MC and MCPE don't recognize each other atm? I await the day they will. I want to make my home computer the server and the family's devices connect to it.

MCPE and windows 10 most likely will connect to each other when 0.12.1 releases. Win10, as of now, will run 0.12.0, but when it gets 0.12.1, they will be compatible. I'd say it'll release in around a couple weeks to 3 weeks.

^This, or very soon.

Right now the "Win10" version (I call it C++ MC for short) has some features that are in the 1.9 snapshots and not in a production Java version yet, like packed dirt paths in the villages. I think the latest xbox version also added these features, but the rest of the console and MCPE versions have not.

In the very near future we're going to see the consolidation of all these features to allow all the versions to play together. Then we'll most likely see features from "Java MC" added to the mix.

As someone mentioned above, LexManos said on a MineCon panel livestream that "Microsoft engineers are following me around asking questions" when he was asked about Win10 modding, so I don't really think we'll see a lot in that direction until the entire userbase can benefit.
