What would cause the launcher to unexpectedly shut down w/o a log?

I am just playing on my server, and all of a sudden, my client shuts down. No crash log, nothing to explain what is going on. It doesn't happen that often, but is annoying when it is ... With Java being up to date, what could be causing this?

Using DW20 1.7 pack

go to the log not the crash log but the forge log and read the last line. see if there anything like "shutting down" or any error. most likely it was your computer running out of processes and it shutdowns the one pulling all the cpu

Will get my hands on it then. Latest version I can get my hands on is 7u71 ... should this be fine?

It should be, but I wouldn't mess with Java just yet.

You have the RAM set to 7 gigs, which is way too high for MC. Also, the minimum is way too low. With 1.7.10 I have found setting them to the same thing helped quite a bit with various problems. You should probably start with 3G, then if possible lower it more. ( I got mine down to 2.5 but I have both added and removed mods. )

Also, make sure you aren't using -permgen. I'm not sure if it causes a problem, but it is no longer used in Java 8.

DW20 ram suggested settings are Minimum ram = 2GB, Maximum ram = 4GB and permgen = 256MB. I believe these are the default settings for Java 1.8, which is perfectly fine to use, BTW.

Forgecraft was fixed about a month and a half ago to work with 1.8, and if you try the new beta Mojang "stand-alone" vanilla launcher, Java 1.8.0_25 is started automatically when you log on (you won't even need to have Java installed on your system anymore).
