Tartarus.. I mean at work. Same thing really.
Well since you're worried about placed torches melting the landscape and then do it anyway...

Not sure if XYtorches/lamps or Redpower lamps can melt snow. Wrath lamps can cover a fairly wide area too.

Minecraft also has a "mob limit" - It'll only have a certain number of mobs in an area, going above this will cut down on spawns. (make a cow farm).

Bees with a 'heroic' effect will attack monsters, but not players.

Hello Forum! I am currently using the reccomended version of the FTB Ultimate Pack. I want to make this door just wide and open. My original plan was to use Interdiction torches, but they not be in here. How do i stop mobs from just wandering in? If i light up the whole area the snow will melt and kind of ruin the look of the landscape. I want it to be wide and open.

attack turtles guarding the door way

It's not specific things that melt snow, it's light itself, so RP2/Eckswhycraft lamps won't fix that problem.

And portal gun turrets are terrible - they shoot at everything including players and die if anything touches them.

And attack turtles would kill him too.
Heroic bees would be good, as would some of the other suggestions above.
A nether portal may he a little risky however.
I'm not sure what damage heroic bees do, but with enough of them, they could kill any enemies that try to enter.

you can make it so turtles shut off with a redstone signal...you can make a persureplate mobs dont activate......

Thanks for the suggestions, I am probably going to be making a door with RedPower and a player detector. Or use microblocks so mobs think it isnt a full block.

What I did on one of my builds:

- Get a Steve's cart with the advanced shooter module.
- Optional but picks up mobs drops: Cleaning machine module.
- Lay down the tracks where you want the cart to patrol.
- Setup a cargo manager/distributor for cart fuel and arrows.
- Watch mob get killed by rain of arrows.

This is not excactly easy to set up, but once it's up and running, it's
really fun to watch :)

Portal turrets wont fire whoever places them on ultimate, they also fire through iron bars, which is a great way to make pillboxes in the open and keep them protected & working.

Two wide Hole with cacti on the boom. With a trapdoor drawbridge. You can even control it with mfr or CC +points for making it proximity aware.

Exact cost: 6 planks, 3 sand, 3 cacti, 6 redstone, 12 plastic sheets, one lever.

It requires a fairly done up power system but I would personally use a IC2 tesla coil underneath the entrance with a not gate underneath it. Then either side of the entrance have obsidian pressure plates hooked up to some kind of counter circuit (RP2 or CC) and then set the time so that it is long enough for you to pass by. Then any mobs that try get in get zapped but if you try the pressure plate turns the coil off and your base is protected.

Alternately you could use a player detector for the not gate.

Another option is to put vines over the door way as mobs cannot see through them then build up what you need to make a proper deterrent.

You could use clouds for that...

Ladders too. There is a certain je ne sais quoi about ethereal glass, though. It's neat to see spaces bigger than 2 wide blocked off from water but permeable to players, and clouds lack that...

I haven't quite figured out the semisolidity of clouds but they don't seem to do what I want.

Ladders and signs are kinda ugly for holding back water and... well ethereal glass is just more versatile :D

What complicates it more is that the various cloud types, sulphur(Sulfer?), Ash, Storm (end) and regular coulda all have slightly different qualities, particularly regarding solidity.
One of the types, ash I think, you can only go down through. You can jump into it perfectly fine, however if you try to walk sideways through it it's solid as a brick wall. You also won't "fall out" of ash coulda and instead fall gently to the bottom and the cloud, and then that bottom layer is solid.
Normal coulda however, can be walked sidewards through and also you can fall out the bottom of them.

Blackout curtains can do cool things also - mobs seem very hesitant to go through them, however they can be pushed through.

Why not build an automatic redstone door out of glass? Unless you are looking to really have an "open" door. I prefer the look of the 3x3 door heh, but that's just me.
