If only 1 mod, it would have to be thaumcraft. Most of the others don't matter a whole lot when you are talking about just them and vanilla mechanics. Thaumcraft has a complete system of items that can stand on its own without interaction from other mods.

Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of great mods in the mix, but by itself, only Thaumcraft stands completely by itself. And it isn't even complete yet.
Yes, yes. All of my thoughts in an entire post!

Edit: Looking through the posts, I saw stuff about BTW, and something occurred to me. BTW will be compatible with all mods when the Official Minecraft Mod API comes out. Forge will be obsolete, unless of course the API sucks hard.

Not true. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE Thaumcraft and would put it in my top 3 mods of all time (in stark contrast to TC2 which I disliked a great deal) but it's not the only mod that stands on its own. IC2 has a large amount of content that doesn't NEED other mods to function, as does redpower and possibly buildcraft. But again, that's forgetting the "big two" of standalone(and in one case "leave me alone") mods; TFC and BTW

Redpower doesn't offer a way to double your output, and would in sense be slightly harder. Not entirely a negative, just something to think about. I would miss a lot of the redstone control from redpower, but it can all be done the old school way. I'd miss the fuck out of red alloy wire.

Redpower also doesn't really have a tier of items, you sort of get more advanced ways to sort your stuff, but that's about it. Not much content.

All in all, I'd want twlight. Just because all the other mods, really get boring quickly without each other. IC2 on it's own is easy to punch your way through to a quantim suit.. then what? Buildcraft's expensive items include the quarry and assembly table.. roadblock again. I don't think I could have a very interesting home/base/plant with just a single mod.

So, twilight, at least I'll be on an adventure for a good while.

There are tiers of items, most people just start with the end. Notice that some machines require earlier machines in their recipe? The Manager is a tier 3 machine in RP2. It takes 2 previous machines to make it. The Sorting Machine and the Regulator. The Sitoring Machine requires a Filter. The Regulator requires 2 Buffers and an Item Detector. Filter (tier 1) -> Sorting Machine (Tier 2) -> Manager (Tier 3) <- Regulator (tier 2) <- Buffers (Tier 1) and Item Detector (Tier 1).

Sad part is even I know that and I don't like RP2 machines!

Yea I'm aware of the technical tiers, I'm more focused on cost. Nothing is really that expensive with RP2. Like you said, most jump into late tier right away - could you really classify it as a tier then? That aside, I love rp2 and suffer without when with all modpacks combined. I find it as a great and almost needed addition alongside other mods. Stand alone however, it's just not very exciting. And the quarry without a chunkloader is sort of a fruitless adventure. Either you stand by the quarry and fill up an enderchest (since your sorting system isn't loaded, nothing is getting sorted) or stand by your sorting system and then the quarry stops moving while the enderchest empties out.

Within I'd say 4-5 hours of playing you should be able to make everything RP2 offers.

GregTech, no IndustrialCraft, just GregTech.

...On a more serious note, probably TC3, I did a similar one mod only thing with TC2 and that was one of the best Minecraft experiences I have ever had.

I can't believe somebody hasn't said this already...
ONE MOD TO RULE THEM ALL

Seriously though, you can do (almost) anything that any other mod can do with redpower and some time.

I would learn how to mod and combine all the mods I like into one. BC, all its addons I know and love, Forestry, Extra Bees, Extra Trees (When it comes out), RP2, Mystcraft, IC2, Gregtech, Power Converters, Thermal Expansion, Portal Gun, TC3, Reliquary, GraviGun, IC2 addons I know and love, BiblioCraft, MPS, Better than Forge, and etc.

Better than Forge
That's out? If it is, frankly I'm surprised the author had enough balls to go through with it.

No, it isn't, but I would try. And it would be a mod for myself, in a world with only one mod per person. And if that was real, I wouldn't be surprised if the authors collaborated to make a mod such as that. The FTB mod.

I would. I'd be hugely surprised.

The way the mod owners act in the Minecraft community, I would be surprised.

Unless BTW decides to not use the API and make there mod go around the API. The dev outright relishes the idea of being incompatible so I would not put it past them to go out of there way to stay so after there is an official API.
Nah, they'd release a separate version that's compatible with the API but will replace every block with text saying, "don't you dare use other mods, go download our version".

Actually, based on a few MCF posts, they don't dislike being compatible\like being incompatible, they just have no interest in compatibility.

So it's possible it'll be compatible, I've thought about it. Though I still feel like it'll be incompatible.

It's FlowerChild, incompatibility is not only a choice (and there was the argument between him and cpw over Forge's merits in which he stated that he would probably never migrate to Forge), it's literally essential because BTW is so different from practically every other mod out there that it is meant to be played like the title of this thread.
