When I saw the Buildcraft quarry, I knew I had to play mods and that I wouldn't go back to vanilla.

It was Railcraft.
I saw all the cool stuff that I could do with rails.
It was so interesting that I gave up on vanilla and learnt how mods are awesome.
Today, with my hazmat suit, my gravity gun and my crowbar, I have fullfilled my dream of being Gordon Freeman and reconstructing Black Mesa on Minecraft.

You know, I can't really remember. A year and a half ago ish, now. I think it was IC2, actually, and Buildcraft, both of which were relatively new. Actually, modded Minecraft itself was new. I was a bit burned out on Minecraft at the time, having just done a lot of big things on my multiplayer server.

Actually, I have that recorded....um, ah:

When I saw EE2's Transmutation Tablet (without all the other things, which even I can agree don't fit in with the "equivalent" feel) brought me to modded Minecraft. I loved the concept of equivalent exchange, from anime to old crackpots who thought they could turn lead into gold. I knew it was a unique feature and could give the game a whole new level. And I enjoyed it.

Then X3N0 left our hearts... forever... then reliquary happened which only brings nostalgia.

I love Railcraft too. It is in my signature. The transmutation tablet is awesome, but I never played with it because I started playing with mods after the 1.3 update. Thanks for the let's play video. I love seeing what other people do in Minecraft.

Although I don't play with it much anymore, Flan's Planes Mod was the first thing that really got me into mods. After that, I discovered IC2, BC and EE2, and didn't look back.

I think the first mod I ever tried was Industrial Craft. I suppose it was the feature of being able to double your ores that was really appealing to me. This was back when I always had a difficult time finding iron in vanilla because I was obsessed with connecting several bases with tracks. Sad I have no desire to do that anymore since railcraft is awesome for that.

Ever so much RedPower. It made my really simple redstone contraptions, like doorbells and night-lighting, so much more fun to build.

It was the complexity of it all

The only reason I played vanilla minecraft was to figure out how to build redstone contraptions/mob traps which sort of exploit the game mechanics, because that was the only thing challenging, everything else is just a grind.

So all the recipes and all the machines you can build with modded minecraft is fantastic :D

I just can't go back to vanilla now.

vanilla gets updates every once in a while, and we get useless stuff like villagers (nothing like pigmen, which we all wanted) and bats. Occasionally we get a good update (1.5.1).

Modded, on the other hand, has countless new things always updating. Unlimited content. The mods change the game. They make it run better, like optifine. We don't have to wait for mojang to add in stuff (like a better less laggy engine or mod API) that they never will, we can have it when we want it. It's like going to live Amish after you have a smartphone. Sure some people like simplicity, but with the mods that only add and don't change, you already have it right there.

PowerCraft, and its predecessors...whose names I can't currently call to mind. The idea of making redstone logic as mind-numbingly SIMPLE as a single, craftable set of entities was game-changing. No longer would I need a room the size of a small house just to have a button-operated piston door. Also, its forays into wireless redstone and the ONE feature I've -never- seen implemented elsewhere, true player/item/mob detectors, that could detect things passing by them in a user-defined radius around themselves and emit a redstone signal when they were...just...there's a reason I always try to find a way to work it into my FTB packs. The only way I could think that MightPork and the others could improve the detectors would be to have them detect in different shapes, other than just a sphere. A line would be quite handy.

First mod ever was TC2. Was watching a DW20 tut on it and moved to forestry. Eventually to Buildcraft. Then I saw the first Yogscast tekkit episodes. That brought be to Technic. And DW20 started using FTB which brung me to FTB. That's my story.

Good'ol BC was what turned me, the possibility to automate so many things you couldn't in vanilla was what hooked me. I got into BC pipes, did some crazy stuff with them and now they're still my favorite for transporting items (AE is close, but for early game they're just too expensive).

I played around with BC quite some time and then I actually went back to vanilla because I got tired of updating BC every time MC would update and somehow the challenge of automating stuff in vanilla got my attention.

And then there was FTB, which I learned about via Etho, and now I don't think I'll go back to vanilla. At least not as long as easy to install modpacks exist :D

I started with better whan wolves back when it was brand new.

Don't remember which block it was specifically, but I felt that it's what vanilla minecraft should be, that it's a spiritual extension of vanilla. And it was, it really was, back then.

Then there was the blessed time I could play better than wolves with redpower. *Sniff* Good memories.

No specific mod or block.

I used to enjoy Docm tutorial videos and he came out with a "modded minecraft" series just a few months before FTB was released playing tekkit. TBH, I was kind of getting burned out on regular MC at the time and thought I'd give it a try.

Everything, I guess.
Being able to build a gigantic amount of stuff is more fun than being able to build a lot of stuff.

Yogscast video from way back in the day where they showed off a combination of BC/IC2.

Not their biggest fans these days, but that's just because I've gotten annoyed with the high-pitched "Oh" or "Ah," whatever the hell that is.

that, and because IMO DW20>Yogscast, but whatever.

Buildcraft engines and oil.

Literally the first thing I ever did with modded Minecraft was build an oil derrick and a refinery.

To this day I remain an avid fan of combustion engines.
