So, if you are playing in a modpack, with hunger overhaul, pam's harvest craft, and all sorts of other mods that deal with food, you might be curious as to what you can make.

And, you might try to spend some time in NEI's recipe mode.

After all, time doesn't pass when you're editing a sign, or a book, or in the menus, so why would you think that time would pass when looking up recipes in single player?

<sigh>.

Suddenly with mobs around me, while I'm only about 30-40 blocks from a village. And, no sword, thank you TiC...

The smart thing to do is run. And running isn't a problem. It only takes me 2 minutes to get 128 blocks away. I even verified that by looking at my video recording of my session.

With render distance set to far. So my stuff, while more than 128 blocks away, is still loaded ...

I had a great idea on how to get back to my stuff. Just before sunrise, I let a zombie kill me when I was far, far away. Only to arrive near my stuff, and see it on the ground for about 3 frames before it just went poof.

I could cry ... almost.

I did wine. Whine. Why'ng?

I take it you're new. Expect bigger and worse mistakes than this. We've all been there.
New? No.

Used to playing multiplayer, where things are documented off-line in wikis, so I can actually play while online? Yes.

Thinking that single player is going to stop when you're not playing -- that's after all why it's not a dedicated server? Yes.

Going to make use of a recent backup, NEI to restore items, etc: Yes.

Used to Magic Farm? Nope :). Still starving while being attacked.

NEI doesn't pause the game. I find it odd that you'd assume that. I'd think it cheaty if it did.

Not really sure why... If it's single player it's the same as pressing escape then switching to a browser to search wiki's.

Ok, so if you are in the normal game menus, adjusting options and settings, the game is paused.

But if you are in the NEI menus, adjusting options and settings, the game is not paused.

This is in addition to the recipe mode lookup not pausing time either.

And yet, books, signs, etc, all do pause time.

I think NEI needs to behave like vanilla. It's not such a big deal, unless you are losing food while standing still and doing nothing. Oh, right, this is magic farm. Well, I could go to the wiki and learn how to make food, right? Oh, no, I not only can't, I don't even know what all those food making items are.

But ... I can smelt bread in a normal furnace to cook it into toast, but a redstone furnace cooks bread into bread. ...???

Books and signs don't pause time. NEI should act like the inventory screen which it does. NEI isn't a menu. Also the fact that it's a mod means that it doesn't need to comply with what is the vanilla standard (which in this case it isn't). NEI is an extension of the inventory screen, not a menu.

Books do pause time. As do signs. In SSP of course.

gravestone mods, they're a lifesaver, or in this case, itemsaver
It's also a life ender if you spend a night in a village, or are anywhere near catacombs with no bed, oh and I usually play on hardcore mode, so gravestones saving my items isn't useful :p

Edit: Forgot that there are thousands of Gravestone Mods, I'm talking about NightKosh's.

I don't really understand Hardcore mode.. the whole point of MC for me is building on what I have and if I lost it all because of a death (which I do often) I'd be pissed!

I read an article in PC Gamer about players who would delete their world after death. They called it Iron Man mode. I think this inspired Hardcore mode. Some people must of thought the punishment of losing all of your items wasn't enough.

Well, when I play Hardcore mode I'm either playing Vanilla, UHS2, or MF2. UHS2 would be completely unbalanced in non-hardcore mode. Of course, when I'm playing other packs, I always play on Hard Mode, rather than Hardcore.

you've people who like to play for fun, and there are people who like to play with a challenge. there's all kinds of people, so there's also all kinds of playing styles.
I'm infact playing in hardcore mode right now, I used to play just normal adventure, but I'd end up restarting my world if I'd die once, because I hate dying, I HATE IT, so I thought, why not hardcore and make it easier for me to delete a world? :p
