Well, the way the mods, and how the community at large uses the mods, is developing that really isn't an issue. Right now we can get low energy loss from distance by many different means. Also many people are moving to REConduits for their MJ power. Normal conductive pipes don't attach to REConduits. You can have normal pipes attach to RECells but then the pipe is sending a constant stream of power, regardless of whether it is needed, into the teleport pipe. It does so as fast as possible thus making it a pain to use as it either drains your RECell completely or you have to dedicate a RECell to throttling it.
In reality though, I think that for SMP mod developers and mod pack builders should look to including more teleport-esque mechanics and less on long-distance building. This is because outside of a passenger rail system any transfer of power, liquids or items over vast distances means the majority of the run is probably going to be unloaded. Chuck loaders work great for ensuring the end points of any network remain loaded, but it would be foolish to have the dozens, if not hundreds, of chucks between those end points also be loaded just to run the mechanics of one rail or pipe system. For the sake of server stability and responsiveness, we want a method of connecting to points of a network together.
Should such things be redonkulously expensive so as to prevent relatively banal, short-distance usage? Absolutely. Enderchests actually serves that purpose quite well with the exception of power. And even then the recharge systems that utilize batteries covers that need in some fashion.
