Thank you all for posting, I knew I joined this forum for a reason. :) I will play 1.5 now and see how things play out. My FTB adventure is about to begin!

Go ahead and play 1.6.

TE seems required, but it is not. With Mekanism and Resonant Induction, you can triple your ores and have quick and big furnaces.

Liquid Transportation -> Ender Tank
Item Transportation -> Ender Chest
Energy Transportation -> Ender Tank filled with Steam, with industrial engines at the place where you need it.

Further, I don't miss anything. I enjoy playing IC2 experimental. Also, I play with MFR and I can add powerconverters (Yes, 1.6.2).

*sigh* had the same problem.
we stopped our server at the time when redpower 2 got removed.
since then we are waiting for updates - but still...nothing usefull.
Looked for the Forgecraft 2 packs - nothing there that works.
I was even thinking about to start a Voltz-Server, because the Calclavia team is up to date whenever i look at the page...but i would miss IC2, MFR and all those stuff.

this all pretty much comes down to 1 question: what do you want to do more?
if you want to play with all the mods, and don't want to miss some of the mods, stay on 1.5
but if you don't mind some mods missing, and really like some of the new features of 1.6, then go for 1.6

there are people who like to keep a world going for months, and there are people who don't mind starting a new world every week.
I'm one of the latter, if I don't like a certain thing in a world, I just end up deleting it and making a new world. by doing that I did find some very efficient ways to start out.
so in my case going to 1.6 would be a wise choice

This. I usually keep about 4 single player worlds at any given time. I usually learn something new that makes me want to use it on a new world as opposed to implementing it in an older world where I did something differently.

Once I haven't touched the oldest in about a month it is deleted. I usually delete a new world if I haven't found a Natura Redwood in about an hour these days as well. I find it's easier to hollow out a tree and make charcoal while starting a garden and building a TC smeltery than it is to search for coal and iron, perhaps starving in the process.

Don't count your chickens before they're hatched.

I'll 2nd this. 1.7 is not out yet.

Personally, I'd go with 1.5 . There is a *ton* there and you'd have to invest/spend/waste/fritter way 100's of hours to even scratch the surface of all the mods in, for instance, Unleashed.

And, that's just Unleashed. There are tons of 1.5 mods not in Unleashed.

I completely agree with Wekmor.

What I'm doing is keeping my server at 1.4.7 and playing single player on 1.5.2 (and soon 1.6). Playing by myself, I don't mind resetting worlds more often (early-mid game is my favorite anyway), but I try to avoid too many server resets.

Knowing my luck, if I updated my server then 1.6 packs would come out right after. Don't want to deal with the complaints from 2 server resets in a row.

Why do you have to change to 1.6 as soon as it comes out? It won't be going away at all, you can even still play 1.5 when FTB updates to 1.6 (Gasp!).

1.6 brings cool things, but there is a helluva lot to do in 1.5 (especially if you're starting new) so go for that and once you get bored in 1.5 (or, understandably, if you see something that is awesome in 1.6 that you can't live without..) then start 1.6 or whatever the latest iteration is after that. :)

I don't think it is possible to have less fun with 1.5.x than you could with a newer version. For everything a new release adds you lose umpteen different things from mods that haven't updated yet. I'm not sure I'd even recommend the 1.5x packs yet, there are still some nasty bugs.

Do neither, take a nostalgia trip and play 1.2.5 and fully utilize EE2 without using cross mod or other exploits, should keep you busy for a week or two, maybe a few depending on how much you know about 1.2.5 mods.
EE2
TC2
RP2
BC
IC2

as the core with a few other fun mods thrown in (and of course the utility mods, NEI\Rei's\Somnia (oh how I miss this mod since 1.2.5, the new version isn't quite there yet though), just have a look around and find yourself a few interesting mods that you can get the 1.2.5 versions for throw them in, stir well and go nuts.

Been there, done that. It's more a matter of hours than a matter of days, though. Once you get to the point where you can automatically turn stuff int EMC, it all snowballs pretty fast.
