Soo... Why exactly is it impossible to automate a Steam Turbine?

damn, inability to insert rotor via AE, BC pipes(they dont even connect), hopper or router, rendered steam turbines completely useless for me, and they were promising math-vise...

If you have enough steel than just build 3 turbines for each one that will work and cycle them. 1st need maintenance, stop it and start 2nd, 2nd need maintenance, stop it and start 3rd, 3rd also needs maintenance -> cutoff fuel supply to boiler and disable chunkloaders because you haven't logged on server in a week. You can control them by splitter cables, if turbine can't produce energy, it won't consume neither rotor nor steam

Ah, good ol' Hoff, spreading negativity wherever he goes. Might work better though if the person you're trying to complain about didn't already post a better explanation...
It's not meant to be negative. I simply do not like that there are no configs. Not to say that I do not like the mod or the mod author I simply do not agree with his methodology.

If I wanted to do as I did to greg's(IC2 forum) thread I would.

Honestly, I love CovertJaguars methodology and wish the rest of the mods would slide a bit towards that rather than Railcraft sliding towards them.

I would agree if configs were present to undo it but never an irreversible change in such direction. Versatility is what makes mods great.

I think that AE is boring as hell to automate stuff. On the other hand, my Railcraft/MFR sorting system (DSUs are the only thing on MFR's end) says hello, mainly because it took me a long time to do so, but it was so much more rewarding then AE. Essentially every production line in my factory uses Railcraft at one point - yes, including ore processing and farms (which uses Mekanism's biogenerator - which uses MFR to the farms, UE to power it and Railcraft to take the stuff from place to place). I like Railcraft, but I think that using a cart to insert the turbine would make Railcraft my favourite mod, surpassing SC2 and TE.

According to Covert he never changed it and it was never possible to automate them. If at some point it was by any means than that was purely a bug and due to that a config to revert the change is not applicable.

My view point on this is that it may of been applied energetics who are to blame for this change if in fact you used to be able to automate steam turbines with AE.

More likely its just random rumors, misinformation, or misunderstanding what was happening. You'd have to use special case reflection code to be able to even access the inventory.

I'm fairly sure Direwolf20 did it on Forgecraft, and all he had to do was connect an AE export bus to a steam turbine, and it worked. I don't think he showed it replacing the turbine on camera, for obvious reasons.

I'm a bit late to ask this, but CJ, you were saying on tuesday that you based your decision on beta feedback. Would you consider doing another feedback round and see what the majority wants now? After all, a lot has changed since Railcraft beta...

Yeah, but we've tested that and it doesn't work at all. Are we really certain that DW's setup worked? (Sidenote, I skimmed through hours upon hours of his episodes, yet I cannot seem to find the episode where he set it up. Could someone who knows throw me a bone here?)

Nothing interacts with the steam turbine. No bc pipes, turtes, ae, extra util pipes, nothing.

i`m pretty sure, that he`s made that setup, because he thought it should work

Episode 18 is where he is playing with steam, and making a turbine, so it's either that episode, or some afterwards to try and get it automated.

Maybe DW set it up, and didn't notice it didn't work until days later when replacing would occur, but forgot to mention it in a later episode? Could be as simple as that.

He did actually show it on camera, atleast the part where the rotor died, AE started crafting a new one and then a camera skip (dire's way of hiding mistakes, be very aware whenever he does one) showing a new rotor inside the turbine. Cant remember wich episode though...

I think a lot of the confusion (for no good reason, since there's nothing wrong with this wording) comes from the Railcraft wiki regarding Steam Turbines in which it states that they will trigger a BuildCraft gate to tell you when they need to be repaired. That doesn't imply that they can be automated, just that they provide a head's up.

When DW20 attempted to use AE to automate the replacement, I actually thought to myself "Wow, did they change that too in the patch?" because Steam Turbines did get a lot of love... double the output for the same amount of steam. I promptly tried it out and confirmed that nothing connects to them. Routers don't see them, etc. For what you get -- I love the new state of the Steam Turbine though.

well such wording doesnt imply that turbines cannot be automated. in fact such wording actually encourages thought that they can, because gates often used for automation, and thus gate user thinks:"a gate indicates when rotor is damaged, so i put autarchic gate on wooden pipe, to extract damaged rotor for repair, and set another pipe to put a new one".

a proper warning on RC`s wiki page about inability of automation, could prevent this thread from existence.

Breaking news: you can use atomic science turbines to produce eu/mj/UE power, and it only costs a bit of steel and a bit of bronze to make.

And yes, atomic science steam and railcraft steam work interchangeably (actually I think atomic science uses railcraft steam if its installed.)
