So... Why are the Voxel mods in FTB anyway?

I mean, I won't say they're BAD mods, but Voxel mods are generally kinda cheaty creative mode tools while FTB mostly focuses on survival... How did this come about? What are they supposed to be adding to the FTB experience?

They make better menus, and it isn't bad that they are creative tools. It's useful for tests worlds, or creative mode builds. And no, FTB don't focus on survival, it's its players who does.

I semi-agree with the OP. I think the voxel map is overall superior to REI's minimap or Zan's (although they're both different), and I'll also agree with Yellow that the GUI and polish are much better.

However, they feel overpowered. The minimap lets you see the locations of all mobs and players around you, and lets you map caves if you're at the same height (Rei's minimap required server permission for similar features; I don't know if servers can disable Voxel maps features). And then there's Voxelplayer. These features just feel unbalanced to me, especially in the Ultimate pack which has Gregtech's defaults enabled.

I know each server / player will set things up the way they like (I'm on a small private server with Gregtech changes disabled), but those features change the dynamics, especially if you want PvP, so I see where the OP is coming from.

Actually, Rei's Minimap does allow you to see entities if you enable it in your message of the day code. The only reason that Rei's was removed is that it has a memory leak.

Actually Voxel Map IS Zan's Map. The only difference is that Zan's is a Forge/ModLoader mod while VoxelMap is a LiteLoader mod.

I wouldn't really care abotu all this Voxel nonsense, except the Voxel developers took it upon themselves to make sure that Optifine's debug info is forced ON when run alongside LiteLoader. So because of that I find myself having to do cleanup after a modpack update... Remove LiteLoader, install a replacement map... I just don't get the point of it all.

I still think slowpoke or whoever is in charge doesn't give a single fuck about the comunity, disables biomes they don't like by default in the config, no modpack with gregnerf on easy, add useless voxel mods without even asking the modpack owners like mindcrack, or even the comunity with Ultimate.

All that would be ok with me if the launcher didn't delete mods you added, readd mods you removed and revert configs at will.

I tried out Ultimate, didn't really like the voxel stuff, except for the waypoint graphics/options. Loved that.

I am running a small private server with a couple of friends, and we made changes to the FTB Ultimate modpack and configs, namely:
  • Added a couple of Mods (incl Mo Creatures & Optifine)
  • Set Gregtech to "easy" (removing nerfs that are on by default) using this config pack, and made some other custom config tweaks.
  • Updated a couple of the mods to a newer 1.4.7 version (Had to disable the version that comes with Ultimate and "install" the newer one)
So far, I have not seen the launcher do anything to affect these changes, not redownloading mods, disabling mods, or resetting configs. The only thing I noticed is that if I just delete a mod that's part of the pack by default, it will say there's a modpack update and ask if I want to re-download it, while if I just disable the mod in the launcher (or add the .disabled tag manually), the launcher will recognize that I "have" it and won't ask to update.

Maybe I missed something?

well, it has deleted me twice the mods, once when I SPECIFICALLY clicked ''you want to update: no'' but didn't listen and second no idea how.

at least server mods work in client.

Strange, maybe you should post in the support section. I can't think of a reason why it would do that.

I always wondered why FTB had such a hard-on for voxel, but I do like voxelmap's automatic level changing feature.

Really pisses me off though, when Voxelmap gets me thrown off a cliff. When I hold down W, A, S, D, or SPACE, then expand the map with X, I'll keep going in the same direction even if my finger is not on the movement key. Then I have to press it again in order for it to stop. Guess I can't check my map while moving anymore. Voxelmenu and voxelmap are very nice looking in design though. I like it a lot better than Rei's.

Huh, I'll guess I remove it then.
Any idea if there are other good minimap mods out there?
(Other than Voxel's of course.)
Zan's, which is exactly the same as VoxelMap but doesn't require LiteLoader.

The only problem I have with VoxelMap is the fucking 1k block limit on the waypoint UI marker.

If I needed waypoints to remember where something was within 1k blocks of my base, I wouldn't have the attention span to log on to Minecraft.

If there's a way to alter that within the config that I didn't see, I'd love to hear about it. Aside from that, I really like that minimap. It's way convenient.
But, 90% of the reason I even have a minimap mod is for the god damn waypoints. The other 10% is to know if it's day or night without having a clock in my inventory.
