Hey guys, new to this community and to be honest I'm not sure if this is in the right spot. However, here it goes.

I'm looking to host a ftb server for me and a few close friends, perhaps more in the future. So I would expect perhaps 10-15 people would be the tops the server would ever see. Maybe 20 if things go crazy.

I'm thinking about using creeper host, and I was wondering what type of package you guys would suggest. Money isn't that big of a deal since the ongoing costs would be split. Aiming for zero lag and maximum uptime, so if maybe there's a better host out there I don't know of?

Anyway, tips and information would be freaking awesome, and I thank you in advance!

Cheers.

I would advise against Ultimate or Unleashed. Both are on outdated versions of Minecraft, which means any problems you encounter will not be fixed unless you or one of your staff members can edit and create mods.

You should probably pick one of the packs for 1.6. The Direwolf20 pack is well rounded in my opinion but Monster is the flagship pack. Work is being done to prep TPPI for release on the FTB launcher, its short for Test Pack Please Ignore which is the name of the pack for the FTB subreddit.

I am one of the beta testers and documentation writers for TPPI so I can say that it is the pack most like Ultimate. It includes Gregtech but with much easier configs and it has a huge number of mods. Because I am a beta tester of that pack, if you have any questions, you are welcome to message me.[DOUBLEPOST=1389497033][/DOUBLEPOST]Also, while CreeperHost is nice for beginners, I find its performance lacking. If your technically savvy, I highly suggest looking for a good VPS or Dedicated machine. A VPS is a virtual private server which means you share a dedicated machine with other VPS's.

Makes sense, I didn't know that they were outdated. I guess that should have been obvious to me.

I appreciate the input, I'm tech savvy enough to get around. And frankly I do have my own physical server but it seems to me that external hosting is the better route since my ISP blows chunks and my personal bandwidth affecting server performance doesn't brush me the right way.

Have any recommendations in terms of hosting in your experience?

If you already have a decently powerful server, perhaps colocation is an option. That means they provide power, bandwidth, and physical security while you provide the server. The best option for this is always finding a local datacenter and asking them about prices. I ran a file server in my ISP's datacenter which is quite small so they gave me a good deal since it was only a fileserver being used for backups.

OVH is a good dedicated server provider but they are all sold out currently which means you would have to contact support and possibly wait a short time to get a server of your choice. http://www.ovh.com/ca/en/dedicated-servers/

I am also a fan of RedstoneHost but they are a VPS provider so other people on the same machine can affect performance of your server if they are abusive and vice versa. http://redstonehost.org/

Those are probably the only 3 options I would suggest because the suggested memory for the newer packs for servers is 4 gigs minimum and a lot of single threaded processor performance is wise.

Was looking at redstonehost and it seems pretty promising. Any idea on what kind pf package you think I should get? You were mentioning that the higher end mod packs (the one's I'm interested in) require a bit more server horse-power. So would the suggested player number they have in their slider not really apply?

I would personally pick the Adventure Tier to start with, then you can have 4 gigs of memory for the server and 512 for the OS and McMyAdmin if you use it.

Yes, the 1.6.4 packs seem to require a lot of server horse-power. The recommended players count from any host is complete crap to be honest, they assume your running vanilla with no plugins, no mods, and a low view distance. I can only offer a very rough estimate, but I would say the Adventure package would be good for at least 5 people and possibly as high as 15 people depending on which pack you pick and how much stuff the players chunk load and build.

Keep in mind that OVH is fairly price competitive and you could get more than 8 gigs of memory and better processor performance for the same or less money.

For example:

OVH Server SP1 has an Intel E3-1245v2 and 32 gigs of memory and 2TB of storage along with 200mbps of bandwidth for $79.99 a month. The RedstoneHost Ultimate Tier has roughly the same processors, but access to 2 or 4 of the threads instead of all 8, all the time. The Ultimate Tier has only 6 gigs of dedicated memory, the rest is only available during periods of low usage by other servers on that machine. Combine that with the with the gap of only $30 in price and 100mbps and the OVH option becomes very attractive if you can afford it to go beyond the first and second server tier they offer.

I'll look into it.

Very much appreciate your input, making this slightly less daunting :p

Btw, with OVH am I looking at their dedicated units or their VPS?
