Seems yet another no-go game (too complicated to craft basic things)

Hi,

Each, each and every game I tried leads me to this dead end scenario: how matter hard I try at getting past some point, it will fail miserably. This is now the case with Feed The Beast Ultime because of the recipes always changing and becoming more and more awfully complex. In FTB Beta Pack, solar panel was easy to craft, with some circuits, coal dust and a generator. Now it requires sillicon thing that I have absolutely no way to find how to get or craft, and I know it will take me hours to figure out and make it. Why change something like this from one version to another, this is just a pain? Yes, there is the argument that solar panel is free energy and should not be available easily, but then, how can one power something outside in a remote area without manually charging with coal, lava or batteries? Yes, I know, this is a mod that changed something and I can remove the mod. This strategy works very well in single player, but in multiplayer, this requires too much coordination since it has to be done on the server but also on ALL clients.

What config do I need to change again? I tried reconfiguring mods several times and it does not solve anything: I find other changed/harder recipies every day. Many people will give up or start cheating if mods constantly change/harden recipes like this.

For the solar panel, you need to change the GregTech config. There are countless other recipes that you can easify in there as well, should you choose

Ultimate has the most mods and is set to hard by default because it's well, the ultimate version. Check the modpack comparison thread in the general ftb section, there maybe a different ftb modpack that you'd enjoy more.

Since most of these mods you're talking about boil down to fancier ways to smelt your ore for free, you're not missing a whole lot.

The very first (and most essential) mod to learn is NEI. Once you know how to look up a "recipe" and a "use" for an item, you have already made the game much easier for yourself, no matter how complicated an item might be to craft.
If it took you hours to figure out how to get silicon cells, it would take a mere one press of a button when looking at the recipe in NEI to learn how.

NEI supports a vast amount of items. If one mod in particular interrests you, go find a mod spotlight or two on youtube to learn more. Finish by looking up any questions you might have on either the FTB wiki or the mods own wiki.

FTB is far from Vanilla and don't expect the "good" items to be free to make.:)

As I have said many times before, gregs config is a pain to understand, and configs overall are a pain by themselves.

Nevertheless, until we live in a land where all mod configs are loaded server-side, players of modded Minecraft need to be aware of and able to modify config files to not suffer grief every other day.

I would say stick to vanilla minecraft they may still change stuff on you but less often, really why bother with mods pack if you dont like mods, not aimed at OP just sayin, & mods are not changing stuff to make it harder on you "erm GT maybe" there evolving at an amazing speed, if you cant stand the heat step out of the fire.

bullshit reasoning btw.. ultimate was set to hard mode because of dragging and dropping config files from the mindcrack pack to ultimate.

Does Direwolf20 still not have Greg tech? If not switch to that pack, it's Gregtech free.

GregTech is a great mod and achieves what it's set out to do (Add more grind, elaborates on a lot of IC2's systems).
As a stand alone plugin to Ic2 it's a great thing to give harder core players of IC2 the experience they want, and as a care bear I can op out if I want.
But when slotted in to a mod pack like any of the FTB packs it makes a lot of servers hardmode by the virtue of the admins being too dumb and or lazy to modify the config and finding a server that does is hard.

And I have a little Mindcrack server that disables a lot of the hard junk and the configs are bleeding monsters, yeah you heard me I said configS there are like 3. 2 for difficulty settings and 1 for block ID's which you don't really need to worry much about.
Changing so many trues to false and visa versa takes a while even when you are using copy pasta and you always miss something.
To it's credit, due to this complexity it does make the mod very customizable.

It is true that vanilla doesn't do overcomplicated bullshit for no reason, like "join 6 sticks together in a line to make a reinforced stick, then put them in a liquifier with a chip to make it be reinforced stiky stick then join 7 of them together in a builder crafting table to make 16 ladders" and instead is "place 7 sticks in a ladder pattern to get 3 ladders"

To have it said, even plain old WordPad offers a "Search and Replace" tool. :p

But it sure would be nice to have a "config customizer" with radiobuttons and checkboxes for convenience.

It does not have GT, nor does it have the Voxel mods. I started with DW20 and tweaked it.

If you're going to mess with configs, you really should get Notepad++ or some decent text editor. Other than Windows, there are different examples of what is decent. It is easy to find a free one.

At least one mod (GuiAPI) tried to bring about a standard for buttons and stuff. Mo Creatures uses it, but not many other mods do. People love to hate configs, but even MC has them. The difference is that MC has a handful of options compared to some mods, and it has the GUI. There are mods that handle the GUI on their own and have buttons and checkboxes - Rei's map is one example. It has a damn config that is a pain to edit, but you hit the M key instead.

get Notepad++
I second that - and as another free alternative, add PSPad to it. =)
I was merely stating that there is no need ("even with plain old WordPad") to go into a config and replace settings by hand. I do use Notepad++ myself. ;)
