"I don't give you permission to quote me and what I say, legalese bullshit here forth follows" That's about what all this permissions bull amounts to.

Whaaaaaa....

I'm not saying it is not popular, not as legally important. Meaning a paid software would be a bigger deal....
Look, they made the mods, so they should at least have a little say over what happens to them. What would you feel like if your child was one day taken by a stranger and fed strange things for a week?

I agree the code is all their's. To steal that should be legally wrong, bad, and evil. Bring down the hammer! But to use them in modpacks is different...

And that's the thing: where do we draw the line? And different modders have different ideas about this. The problem is that we have to put self entitled bucks into the equation and that messes everything up

I draw the line at modpacks. Btw, I grant automatic perm to FTB packs, so don't shout at me!

Why is mod theft a problem?
Outdated Versions

When users find a bug, they then go to the mod author to report it. The problem is, that the bug was fixed 2 months ago! This is very annoying for both the author and the user.

Wrong Minecraft Versions
Those websites are marking the mods as working with wrong Minecraft version. They do this to get more downloads. The user will then go to the mod author and complain.

Possible Malware
Mods from those sites might be packaged with malware, and shouldn’t be trusted.

Making money off other people’s work
Those sites are placing other peoples mods behind AdFly links, and other ads, and are directly earning money from other people’s work.

Stealing Money
When many people download from those sites instead of the official sites, the author loses revenue. Modders don’t earn much from their mods, but small amounts of money can be a big motivation.

Stealing Downloads
Maybe one of the most encouraging things about making mods, is seeing your mods getting lots of downloads. When many users download from those sites instead of the official sites, the author loses many of downloads from his/her server. This is extremely discouraging for the modder.

Just the feeling of finding your mods on those websites is extremely discouraging for many people. Lets say that you wrote a book. The day after, you see the book in a shop, with a big “9books” logo on the front page. You haven’t even been notified. How would you feel? You then read the books ToS, and see that “9books” is claiming to own your book! This is extremely discouraging.

If I was a modder, I'd draw the line at rehosting the individual mods. I'm okay with modpacks and the such, but I would tell people to at least know something about the mods their using before starting

On...? I just think perms are different than what you are talking about.
If you ask me, it depends on how much time was put into the pack. If it was just a quick drag and drop pack I don't think authors would take too kindly to it nowadays, but something like you're doing is different. The permissions thing is more of a formality than anything. It's just to keep various idiots in check.

I like the basic alert use and such, the drawn out thing makes me mad. I should not have to prove my pack to you for me to use your mod... That's just annoying and dumb...
