Thanks for providing this informative piece of text. Now I see why all these things are getting on your nerves.

But how come that no other mod author feels the need to do similar things as you? Messing up the balance with Minetweaker can easily happen in other mods as well.

For instance, take Gregtech. Its tech tree is similarly complex to Rotarycraft's. Let's say item X requires aluminum ingots but is fairly cheap otherwise. A pack author might go ahead and make it require 27 diamonds instead. Suddenly X can be obtained before you have an electric blast furnce.
And if some item Y is disabled it can cause inaccessibility of a subtree just as well as in your mods.

You see the point, one can easily mess it up when the balance and tech tree are sufficiently complex.
How come that Gregtech doesn't need to make these kinds of restrictions? Is it because Greg has a thick skin and just doesn't care? Is it because people don't use Minetweaker as often or as extensively than with your mods?

By the way, before I started to use your mods I was kinda thinking "wow, this mod's developer is kind of a douche" because of the way you reacted to stupid comments, no offense (really not @Celestialphoenix). People can't tell stupid comments apart from valid suggestions and critics and think you would generally behave like that. This, paired with the restrictions you're making, is really ruining your PR.
The first impression counts.

(by the way: funny how I overlooked the above quoted post for almost a week :D )
@Reika The stupid comments are really funny. I actually laughed for two straight hours while reading and rereading them. Seriously, they are sad, in that such brainless morons were let on the internet, and really funny, in your responses to the incidents.
Wait till page 90.
Everyone will get a free gallon.
Oh good, I will need it.

What amazes me is, how "They" have the time and effort to spend on slashing the authors, instead of doing something productive.
Like writing "The Idiot's Guide To The Internet. How To Slander Awesome People, Why We Should Get What We Want, And More!"

I really lost the respect for certain modpack devs the first time I read that thread on Reddit. If they ever want to use my mods, they should ask very nicely.

Wait...that Reddit topic quite strongly implies that I'm, like...6 years older than ChickenBones. Every time I've heard his voice, I'd swear he's around 6 years older than I am. WHAT?

He was 15 when he started modding.

Code:

Tartarus.. I mean at work. Same thing really.
I think Greg's given up caring about what people do with his mod. (his permissions statement pretty much says that). Also he only seems to be found on his personal forum, so chances are he gets a lot less crap than someone who hangs out in the public spotlight.
Design wise Gtech has a metric fucktonne of config options, which would be physically impossible to provide the same fine-tuned balance RotaryCraft has. People could just as easily break stuff with the config as they can with MineTweaker.

before I started to use your mods I was kinda thinking "wow, this mod's developer is kind of a douche" because of the way you reacted to stupid comments...

Sadly first impressions can really skew our view of things, especially if you catch someone with their pants down.
Whats worse is once you have a negative view of someone, you tend to see the reasons behind something as inherently negative. And vice versa.
(which is why in the eyes of a fan, "X celebrity" can do nothing wrong. #FreeJB)

Don't take the quote out of the context please!

Most mod authors do not care about their mods' recipes being tweaked because they have no real progression to speak of; most often, later-game items require more resources, but could be used as an entry point to the mod if resources were not an issue. (This, by the way, is the primary argument used against the Extractor's 5x ore multiplication, that those mods become inherently unbalanced. I suspect it was also used back when macerators were introduced). Thus the consequences described in my page do not exist.

Some mods have minor progression, like ThaumCraft with the three crafting tiers, but here is the major catch: Everyone is already familiar with those mods, so no pack dev or server admin would turn off or circumvent any of the tiers, and even if they did, the changes would be immediately obvious, making the problem of false bug reports and/or a bad rep for the mod nonexistent. Additionally, the progression in mods like ThaumCraft or TiC is small and can be completed in a matter of an hour or so, and is much less complex than that of RC, making unintended consequences much less likely. Finally, if it was a common problem, and the reputation of mods like TC started to suffer because too many people were breaking them, you can bet that their devs would respond.

The only other Forge mod I know of that has major progression is GregTech, and as you say, he stopped caring what people do to it long ago. Not only is he sheltered from the vast majority of the community and thus receives far less hate and vitriol than a more public developer, but because of others' smear campaigns, plus a few bad decisions on his part, his reputation is already in the toilet for many and thus he feels he has nothing to lose.

I am going to add this to the page.
EDIT: done.

First impressions are rarely correct. You might look at me on the street and think that I'm another loudmouth metalhead, what with my oh-so-scary hair longer than a freakin buzz-cut. However, I am not. In person, I almost never talk, and even then, I pretty much only speak when spoken to. Being quiet might make you think that I think that I'm better than you, or that I'm plotting something ever so devious and evil. Again, demonstrably false. I don't talk because I honestly don't think I have anything worth saying, even though I likely do, but don't think so because of the abuse I suffered at the hands of the...tiny, small-minded nuisances otherwise known as children when I was in school. Put simply, going solely off a first impression is a textbook example of judging a book by its cover.

I once had a woman run across 6 lanes of 70kph traffic to get away from me being behind her....I am probably the most quiet and non-interacting person you are likely to meet.

how would a person even go about filing a suit anyway?
you don't know ANYTHING about the other party.

not MC related, but I ran a youtube search on an upcoming game im really interested in in order to (re)find some official content on the game, and holy **** HOW HARD IS IT TO ABIDE BY THE BLOODY NDA AND NOT POST VIDEOS OF ALPHA TEST GAMEPLAY TO YOUTUBE?

I was under an NDA for an earlier game from that same company, and if they haven't changed the wording too much for the new project, I wish it was more practical to actually go after these people and file suit for the $10,000 fine penalty clause. I imagine once word got out that the company was actually going after the breachers, people would be way less inclined to leak content.

Filing a suit to me would be easy. I have full name, age, adress and phone number easily accessible on the internet...

Everything have always been accessible, but got possible to link to me after my DMCA notices were published.
Lots of Norwegian persons have publicly available phone numbers, age and adress btw. The telecompanies are publishing the phone number by default.
