Not intended to improve combat - there's no other way to get ores in VM. I'm trying to get suggestions on how to improve combat to make it more interesting, so the player doesn't feel like it's a constant grind of killing things for resources.
If killing mobs is the only way to get ores, isn't it always a constant grind of killing them for resources?

Yes, but the goal is a fun grind. I want to make the combat as interesting as possible, so that people don't become tired of it quickly.
You'd have to change the AI and preferably introduce mobs with new varying behaviours. The vanilla combat AI just doesn't cut it. Even with the many new mobs that Lycanites adds, it is still pretty dull because the AI can still be kited and cheesed.

Judging by the video, they only drop ingots if a player kills them? If you don't make better mobs/AI, people will just make a hallway to funnel mobs into and kill them without challenge or fun. I could even make a macro on my mouse that clicks repeatedly to AFK farm because there is no real danger.

I meant you as a general term for your group. :p

What are the responsibilities for each member of your group?

You gentlemen should probably give them the ability to break blocks too. But, that system appears to have limitations. SpecialAI can give them this ability, but it doesn't work on dirt, stone and stone bricks. Unless you can find a way around that, you can achieve total security with a 1 block thick dirt wall.

I'm trying to make that as difficult as possible. Creepers that still explode when they die, f'rinstance. With Mob Griefing off. But anyway, this thread is on the combat. Any mods that add AI that you think would be good

People can be totally safe without mob griefing. That is not as difficult as possible.

Also, a mob xp farm can still be made like vanilla where they will be funneled and drop to OHKO status and be farmed that way if resources are to be solely gained from killing mobs.

The only games I've ever seen make grinding monsters for all of your materials fun (or just grinding in general) have enemy AI that blows MC's out of the water and into orbit. Monster Hunter comes to mind.

if anything, you need to make new, interesting mobs with different characteristics. as in completely forget about archetypes, just have slow, giant monsters that won't knockback when you smack them. That way, you run up to them, smack their legs with your sword as many times as you can before running away from a huge telegraph attack. Like monster hunter. That will at least liven the game up as it's something minecraft would never have done before.

Also, a Jousting mechanism would be cool, such as a lance. Instead of swinging it, you just hold it in front of you and run into things to cause damage. Give it a bit more range than a sword, otherwise you'll end up next to a sissling creeper when you wanted to skewer it instead.

Thirdly, keep it simple and use DSS:MM. Anyone can create it so long as they keep the title and give me credit for the idea
