So I travelled to the nether today in an attempt to find some of that rare iridium ore that everyone loves. What struck me as odd when I started flying around with my jetpack is that the only ore I could find was pyrite ore, and boy was there a lot of it. I was under the impression that basically every ore available in the overworld would also be in the nether. After noticing this I began to get worried that there were no iridium ores generated in my nether either. Any info on this topic would be appreciated.

No sir. There is a mod that adds ore to the nether but it's unstable and has a tendency to blow up while you're mining it (fairly annoying).

I believe the Iridium showing up in the nether was a bug which has been fixed.

In the FTB 1.4.2 beta iridium can spawn in the nether. With the most recent version it is fixed and is only in the over world. However also with 1.4.5 he has added ores to The End on the main platform and on asteroids that spawn off in the emptiness. Those ores can be used to obtain iridium more easily than digging out the overworld. 4 Sheldonite ore in his industrial grinder gives 1 iridium ore + some platinum dust which can be used for machines or centrifuged into more iridium dust.

Yes. It's just way too rare.

FTB Pack A includes GregTech with some fairly harsh recipe replacements... one of which is the requirement to find iridium ore rather than being able to matterfabricate it. I think the average distribution is like 1 iridium per 1 chunk.[DOUBLEPOST=1355971336][/DOUBLEPOST]

Really? i'm increasingly convinced that Greg is a sadist.

I like it really. Otherwise you have no reason to head there unless you want an enderfarm or the useless dragon egg, and who wants to go there for an ender pearl farm when you can use mystcraft and setup a sky biome world where only endermen spawn anyway. The idea is to use redpower 2 frames to travel through the emptiness and mine them out, but just using the jetpack hasn't been awful. Really nerve racking being around so much void though.[DOUBLEPOST=1355972032][/DOUBLEPOST]Well I just went into a sky biome mystcraft world and it spawns the asteroids there. So you don't even have to head to the end. Just making a single biome sky world would be enough. Set it to eternal day and endermen will only spawn under the asteroids anyway. Fly up, mine out, leave.

I just checked the launcher and I do seem to be running 1.4.2 beta at the moment. I still haven't found any iridium in the nether, though...

1.4.2 beta should be using 2.03b gregtech which was before he fixed it. It is still there, but it doesn't mean you are going to be rolling in it.

Is there any way I can test that I am in 1.4.2 beta before I fly around the nether any more? The launcher says 1.4.2 beta (as it did when i first downloaded the launcher), but I've downloaded at least 2 updates since I downloaded the launcher, so I have a hunch that I'm not in 1.4.2 anymore, even though the launcher says so (when i choose which modpack to load).

It should say it in the lower left corner of the minecraft main menu or if you press F3 it will be in the upper left corner. From the main menu if you click mods and find gregtech on the list it will tell you the version number. The 2 updates you downloaded were probably for the launcher itself.

Then I am, indeed, in 1.4.2. I guesss I'll fly around the nether some more, get me enough iridium to make a matter fabricator, then update to 1.4.5.

Think I read somewhere that mojang was planning to add more ores(probably existing ones) to the nether to give people a reason to even be there. Right now, it just isn't worth the trouble. Even if you had nether ores, it was just horrible.

I actually like the nether ore mod, but the last time I loaded it, the colors were off on the ore blocks vs netherrack. The ores stood out like a sore thumb. i guess there was vanilla texture change. I was playing survival hard core, and doing pretty well. I had forgotten that mining the nether ores made the pigmen hostile. I got swarmed... Lost that world. yolo. :)

I've added the NetherOres mod, never had any problems with stability. Having the ores explode was not a major deal.

I liked the conception of nether ores but doubling the output was always a bad thing, most people mined there that had any sort of inclin of how to make it rich quick. Having standard ores there would be a good thing or better still having only certain ore types in the nether would also be cool.
