As the RFTools mod author I (obviously) tend to use RFTools for my dimension usages. I typically make dimensions for void ages as well as mining ages. Sometimes when I have a rather nice floating island type dimension I tend to make bases in that as well.

However, I still like Mystcraft a lot and I would never use RFTools in a more magically oriented play or modpack. I like to go with the flow of the modpack and it would be really out of place to use RFTools when all the rest is magical stuff :)

That is true, but I still think that I wouldn't even think of bothering with Myst anymore.
It was complex enough (for a noob like me) when it first came out, and it only got harder. And with the ever mounting disadvantages to having it (slow profiling, instability that is almost always there, even in random worlds, etc.) I don't feel like I would ever use it :/

I see your point, but for me it all falls apart when there is no ATG world gen page...

For me, some competent modder could do well by stepping up to the plate and making a Mystcraft alternative that simply exposed the list of world generators as potential dimensions.
Then, depending on the mods that are installed - BoP, EBXL, BWG4, ATG - as well as the existing world generators (large biomes / super flat etc ) could all be used.
For balance, the mechanisim that allowed presets for the super flat generator would need to be whitelist controlled.

Am I the only one who never liked mystecraft? Right from the get-go?

For me Mystcraft is really why I play modded minecraft. I was strictly vanilla until Mystcraft opened my eyes to what mods could potentially achieve.

I completely hate what it became.

I would love that.

Maybe?

Isn't that mostly what RFTools does but then without the costs (which you can remove in the configs btw).

Unless I'm not understanding the proposal.

RFTools is a well executed idea.

However. My proposal is that to me - the perfect dimension adding mod - would not (necessarily) add any generation code of its own. It would simply expose the list of world generators typically visible when starting a new world as the potential dimension specifiers.

So ideally, (as an admin) I could create a dimension using the Super Flat generator, with a redstone ready preset, and a particular seed, and get the exact same result had I created a new game / world from scratch with those settings.

--
Allthough, if FRTools was to adopt this approach it would logically be split into two components.

1. RFDimensions would register as a world generator, meaning that players when creating a new game could choose to create their overworld to be provided using the RFTools generation code. That could be fun yes?
2. RFTools then would remain as a technical way to create additional dimensions, probably defaulting to the above generator.

Is that very useful? The two most common dimensions that people make are void worlds (which you cannot do with the above proposal as far as I know) and mining worlds which are typically flat worlds but not the way Minecraft usually generates them because setting a quarry at height 5 will not give you a lot of ores :)

... That, my friend, depends on the preset. ;)
As for the suggestion, though, I think the basic idea is for the casual modded player who wants void/flat/mining dimensions etc. to be able to get them without having to explore so-and-so far down the tech tree of whatever mod. Having a progression isn't a bad thing - for the purposes of this discussion, though, people just want quick'n'easy void ages (which RFTools can do, for the most part; it just needs power/not everyone knows that).

It boils down the fact that people want something much simpler than Myscraft/RFTools but with a bit more variety/choice than Aroma's Mining Dimension. :p

I'd hope so. By getting a mod like RFTools to use existing world generators two useful things happen:
1. Other modders can implicitly create dimension generators by writing world generators.
2. RFTools own dimension generation code could become available to use as an overworld. Surely it can make pretty dimensions? Maybe I don't want a boring overworld at all :p

It is my assumption that in implementing this the mod would extend the basic set of vanilla generators to include a void/skyblock option. Or simply leverage existing mods like BWG4 (http://www.minecraftforum.net/forum...-world-gen-mods-realistic-world-gen-alpha-1-3) The point is, the types of worlds that can be created now is open ended.

Just a note: the keyword is right there at the beginning...

Not RFTools itself for the first bullet, I think.
2. Totally playing that with others in my next world. Is there a way to sleep in RFTools dimensions, @McJty? :)

No not yet. I didn't manage to get that working properly yet. I did manage to avoid the exploding beds though (which is the default behaviour if you sleep in a dimension other then the overworld :)

Specifically, to answer the poll, I use Mystcraft for two things:

1. the /tpx command
2. to create a link hub in the nether, that links locations in Twilight Forest and the Overworld and End. Yes - no Mystcraft dimensions there...
3. To pretend that one day, once I have collected enough symbols, I might submit to the dark gods Dogar and Kazon and actually try and make a specified age.

Cofh has a tpx command now. Doesn't work quite the same, as it TP's you to your current coordinates in the new dimension... I miss the ability to hit worldspawn by just /tpx 0

Also WarpBooks is the mystcraft linking book only better in every way except lack of portals.

Someone needs to make a WarpBook addon that adds Mystcraft style portals with Warp Books instead of linking books. That would be pwn

It would have to use the pages, not the book though, because the book can hold multiple pages

This RFTools mod sounds really cool... I wish it were in the DW20 pack sigh...

Well I'm trying to get Direwolf's attention in the hope he makes a spotlight for RFTools. The last one from Vaygrim is very good but it is already outdated.

And maybe if he does a spotlight he will like it enough to let it be added it to Direwolf20... One can only dream :)

In any case, you can always add it yourselves. It should work fine.

I can add it to my sp but as I play on a server with other people (who are awesome btw ... Steincraft dw20 server...) I can't add anything and nothing extra is going to be added in addition to the dw20 pack which is completely understandable because you know it's a dw20 server :p
