While playing the Magic World 2 FTB pack, I noticed I was never getting any extra seeds from my magical lapis crops, even after 8 harvests. I also only received a single seed when I initially crafted the seeds.

In the configs, the settings had everything turned way the heck down. Bonus seeds were completely turned off, so I would never receive any more lapis seeds until I crafted more. The yields for crafting with the essence was also turned way down.

I changed everything back to the defaults for Magical Crops, but this left me wondering, why were the settings like this in the first place? Is there a good reason why Magical Crops is turned down so far in the FTB configs?

I haven't played MW, but there was the idea that Magical Crops is kind of easymode bees. Once you get some sort of growth acceleration in a pack like monster, you can get all of your resources from the crops.

They probably made it more in line with other methods so the crops don't become the main way people get resources.

^ This.

Seriously, it's surprisingly easy to nearly insta-grow the crops at very little to no running cost, and then you just have to harvest automatically...

Also, if you have to craft every seed, it not only makes each one more valuable but makes you think about how to set up your farms most effectively
I'm not sure what the defaults are in Horizons, but I noticed that "decent" seeds were really damn expensive diamonds/emeralds-wise. To the point where by the time I could justify making a single diamond seed, I was probably at the point I didn't need it anymore.

I was actually pretty pleased that the seemingly-cheaty magical crops system wasn't ridiculously OP. As a result its the only magical mod I left in my Horizons pack at all :)

You only need the one diamond to get started, then every seed always requires 4 of each resource, plus a lot of essence and correct level essence stone thingy.
Just grow a diamond seed for the "bling" factor.

Not diamond intensive, just essence intensive. Very essence intensive.. 16 stack essence intensive for top tier seeds.

The infusion stones don't get consumed in any recipe they're used in, including the stone upgrading ones.

Well, those 16 stacks are pretty easy to get starting with one essence seed, if you have the chance to get a second seed enabled and have a way to grow them a bit faster.
I find myself with 1 essence seed and in a few MC days I have a farm dedicated to them, and seriously considering automating it.

In my pack I've just "nerfed" the mod a bit. Each crafting recipe of essences results in 1 of the resource you are growing instead of multiple items, brings it closer to the bee system, and seriously reduced the chance of an extra seed.
I feel the mods default configs are great for vanilla, but need to have reduced chances/outputs when there are easier automation options available within a pack.

Sorry, my comment was with having to craft each seed in mind. So if you don't get essence seeds proliferating, then it makes it a significantly harder task to make a large farm to get that high amount

rofl seriously? I thought I had tested this. I have barrels full of essence but I've been hoarding my diamonds for other purposes. I hope you're wrong in a way :p

Maybe because growing infinite pools of diamonds is a wee bit overpowered. Just maybe.
You place a higher value on diamonds than I do :)

Thanks for the input, everyone! So far as I've been playing, it seems like the "hard mode" configs made the mod actually underpowered compared to the rest. Particularly with Twilight Forest - you can harvest stacks of blocks of lapis from a single hollow hill if you've got a fortune pick. Conversely it would take a huge amount of time to gather enough essence to make a decent lapis farm.

Well, really, the fault would be with TF if the pack is balanced around the hard mode option.

In my personal pack, I limit the Twilight Forest and other dimensions by being only accessible via Stargate. Players have to then first find/build a stargate and keep a steady "fuel" supply to power the gate.

I think the setting is the same in Monster. It seemed to me that by the time you would get any decent output of the higher tier stuff, I'd be in my second or third playthrough of the game. So I just skipped the mod. I did have a few crops for getting slime and clay, etc. for a while. Running a single maxed out quarryplus in twilight forest gets you 3000+ diamonds, so why bother with the seeds unless you're intentionally limiting yourself?

The only thing they are useful for was EMC stirage items for the energy condesnor in 1.2 and TiC upgrades, and a few things in TC and IC
If my math is right, and it rarely is, it took me something like 515 to build a single ElectriCraft Aurora battery.

Yes it was worth it.

It is weird that the setting is like this.

I have a farm of platinum seeds, so I can get resonant ender very easy and pretty much infinitely. That's one of the only uses I see with it.
