It's apparently the nature of modded minecraft - for whatever reason - to have "major milestone" points in its history.

v1.4.7 was one such major milestone, with FTB Ultimate being the signature modpack.
v1.7.10 is just another such milestone point, with a similar signature modpack, FTB Infinity.

I have no idea what vanilla version will be the next major milestone point, or even if the next signature pack will be "FTB xxx" since the shift to Curse means the FTB naming convention will be symbolic or traditional at best. Just a meaningless label now.

Even tho I suspect the bulk of the FTB team is shifting over to Curse (what I like to speculate as their way of getting "real jobs" LOL), FTB seems to pretty much be fading into the Halls Of Memory. And a good memory it shall always be!

I suspect v1.10.x is headed towards being the next milestone point, since it will likely be the starting point for this Curse(d) journey we're all about to be on in the future. :)

Sidebar: They could have called it "Bless", but instead they chose "Curse". I would have much preferred the former (a positive) than the latter (a negative connotation). But I digress, as usual.
Bear in mind that Curse as an organisation have been around for quite some time :p Curse, Inc. was born in 2006...

FTB and Curse are, and remain, completely separate entities. The agreement that we have is a partnership, not a merger. As such FTB has its staff and Curse has its staff, they are separate and there is no crossover. As for our route to 'real' jobs, some of us already have real jobs and there are other plans afoot, separate to Curse, that may help in that regard as well.

As for the naming of Curse and the word itself having negative connotations, pretty sure they are aware of this, but it's a bit late for them to do anything about it. They are working hard to fix everything they can despite the negative sounding name.

I would say "Short answer: no."

I've been keeping up with DW20's most recent Forgecraft series, and it can clearly be seen that many mods are being worked on - often in entirely new iterations. We are absolutely on the cusp of a major shift, it's teetering on the brink and is about to hit once the stability is sorted out.

A perfect example of what I mean - I think we are really quite close to getting Thaumcraft 5; it may be that Azanor has found that for his work, the shift between 1.8 and 1.9/1.10 was not trivial, which is why it's taking time - but I can guarantee it will be worth the wait! :)

There was a recent discussion on the series that really shines a good light on the whole thing, and it was basically a "where should we stop and lay our hat" in terms of versions - the consensus seemed to be that 1.10.2 was a good point for mod authors to pin their development around, as further changes to Minecraft itself were only going to be minor content ones. So we're basically there! :)

I think the upcoming versions of mods, such as ExtraUtilities2, Thaumcraft 5, and so on, are truly new mods; best not to pine for the old ones I think - let new ideas flow! And then there are entirely new ones such as Intangible, Psi, Roots, Chisel&Bits and so on, which bring in a whole new suite of fascinating mod mechanics.

Apart from the fact that I don't think my ancient laptop will run any of it, I'm extremely excited about the whole thing! I'm certainly looking forward to watching things come out.

Give it a couple of months, and I really do believe that we'll have reached a maturity in the new stuff that packs will start to blossom and appear.

I recall that conversation as well. Slowpoke was on and he and DW were discussing it. The consensus was that 1.10 ran many 1.9.4 mods without modification after Forge was modified to allow that, and this continues with 1.10.2 as well.

With Mojang's increased release schedule (1.11 snapshots @ Minecon) and tweets about no major internals changes to MC until at least 1.14 according to the text I saw (others say they've seen 1.17), they decided to hold at 1.10.2 and who knows? These mods may be portable through a few upcoming versions?

I seem to recall that he meant 1.10.2 was the base development. So as long as nothing major changes to mess with transition of mods through those further iterations of MC, there's no reason not to develop for 1.10.2, and then just run them in future versions. IE, if nothing new turns up to break old mods, all you have to do is change the Minecraft version you're installing into.

Thank you for explaining things, and for correcting any misperceptions I may have stated in my post. I'm glad to hear things aren't quite as I was imagining them to be, and my best wishes to the entire FTB team!

bear in mind this is my two cents. I see no evidence of a partnership. And if there is truly a partnership, ftb seems to be the minor player. I see compromise. Not collaboration. It's win for curse and lose for ftb. The only thing ftb got was use of a pre-existing launch platform. Again.... This is based on personal observation. So take it with a grain of salt

Hmm I've heard that, in spite of the original comments, 1.11 may actually contain some not inconsiderable behind-the-scenes stuff to do with item IDs and so on. I think the modders are right to pick a version and stick to it, and unless 1.11 really helps with something or other, 1.10.2 sounds like the place to do it.

There's quite a few packs already available for 1.10. FTB will be late to the party as usual. In light of their Curse partnership and the resulting open availability of packs, I'd suggest just trying to packs and not waiting for FTB. Avant is an amazing pack with tons of new and fresh mods. All the Mods is good, but I'd disable all the mob mods like Rough Mobs and Infernal Mobs before playing due to the combat update.
