My rule of thumb... 2GB for your 64-bit operating system. 4GB for Java and Minecraft. (Java 1.8 default config). If you want to run anything in the background add more ram.

My laptop (Quad-core AMD@ 2.5Ghz and 4GB) does not run 1.7 packs like infinity or DW20 at all well. Luckily most new systems at least have an 8GB configuration available. Upgrading a laptop from 4GB to 8GB will cost over $200, while completely replacing the ram in a desktop with 8GB runs about $80 for good ram (if all your slots are full before upgrade).

Many claim that 2.5 GB is enough for Java/MC but they get nowhere near proper performance with a large 1.7 pack like Infinity. They will do okay with packs based on MC 1.6.

2.5 gb is definitely not enough for Java, all one has to do is watch task manager while playing, Infinity will go over 4GB regardless of what you set the launcher at. I also disagree with 6GB being enough overall.

In my opinion, a minimum amount of RAM for current computer use is 8GB. My current view is your gaming shouldn't use more than half of your RAM if you want good performance. Especially if you are using win10, and I would go so far as to say 12GB is a realistic minimum for gamers.

Also, it should not cost as much for RAM as Ham says above. I just upgraded my laptop from 6G of DDR3 to 12GB (this required replacing a 2GB stick with an 8GB stick) for $50 ( 8GB of laptop DDR3-1866 for $50). RAM is cheap. Especially older RAM.

All is good, but I need to know what the minimum memory needed to play on a dedicated server. It is advisable to 2gb

Sorry, I didn't get the reference to running on a server. Since I've never run a server I bow to more experience.

Sorry to disagree, Baron... Older laptop ram is not cheap. To upgrade my laptop (new in 2009) I have to replace my 4GB (2x2GB) with the following 8GB set:

Crucial CT1465539... DDR2 PC2-6400 8GB (2x4GB) $240

You should search your mem on ebay. If you have to pay more than $50 for that you are getting burned.

I don't buy anything on ebay... I've been burned, TYVM :D

Besides... I like a good 3 year or more warranty on my equipment... Once a power supply failed me and took everything in the system with it. Good thing I had those warranties, all I lost were some files I don't miss anymore.

Try buying anything for out-of-date equipment... I've replaced brand new 20mb hard drives costing the company over $1000 into older cash registers... There's no demand for such anymore except as service replacements and as a professional you cannot put used parts into customer equipment.
