Industrialization:
Forget about your magic boxes, this is as real as it gets

As some of you are probably aware, I've been spending the last few weeks working on a new mod called Industrialization. If you're not aware of what this mod will entail, read the basic summery from the thread and original Reddit post below.

The core idea of this mod is to take you back out of GUIs and into Minecraftia. Don't expect to be able to simply pump power and items into a box and have something happen. To get anything of use out of this mod, you will be expected to plan and construct actual infrastructures to get your desired end result. Less of pumping things in and out, and more of actually seeing the physical results of your actions and contraptions.

One of the things I'm not particularly fond of with tech mods these days is how little you actually interact with the world around you. It's all just GUIs.

What if you had a mod where your ore processing wasn't just putting things in machines and plugging them in, but setting up an array of pistons to literally smash your ores into piles of dust. What if instead of magically getting two pure piles of metal dust, you have to setup an interesting water system to filter out the stone and other non-metal components?

The current version of the mod (still very much in its infancy) can be found here.

While I have many ideas for how the mod may grow and be shaped, I also want to get community input, since automation and working with these sorts of mechanics is a core thing in most tech mods. I have my ideas for how things should work, but I know others may think differently, and I'd love for as many people to enjoy it and have a use for it as possible.

No idea is too stupid or too ridiculous. Lemme here what you've all got to say!

You could add in some sort of way to get and utilise gold more realistically, for example at the start of the game you could make a pan of some sorts and go panning for gold, this gold can be used in some sorts of electronics to make them work faster/better, later in the game you could start to build better ways of getting gold. You could have some sort of machine to see if that area is a gold rich area, then mine there... This is just an idea for gold because for some reason I think gold needs more uses than just a stepping stone to diamonds in most other mods.

One thing that might be cool is a multiblock furnace that you need to place the actual ore blocks inside and then you get the storage block as a return for every 4.5 ore blocks. This could need to be heated externally and have efficiency for how well it is heated/insulated. There could be a set of furnaces underneath that need to be fed coal blocks or something.
The conveyor belts that are already incorporated could easily be then used to drop coal blocks and ores to where they need to go.
Just some thoughts; love the whole idea though.

Along the lines of VapourDrive's idea, I'd love to see a way to setup spatial storage, like automatically making a giant pile/cube of metal storage blocks. It'd definitely fit the large factory aesthetic. I don't know of a sensible way of doing this now. (Constantly running Builder? Turtle script? It all seems unwieldy)
I'd also like to see sloped conveyor belts, but that's not necessary.

Multiblocks, multiblocks, multiblocks.

Also, Id say for ore processing, think panning for poor or inefficient ore discovery and maybe pressure washing or machine washing somehow for more effective ore discovery. maybe research how it really done. Maybe make the grinding actually visible or something.

The only advice I can give is think big for lowtech and small for high tech end game. Literally.

I managed a department at a foundry for about a year. The amount of space it takes to run an actual smeltery is huge. Easily spreading across several chunks in minecraft. And that's not even counting tha resin casting/plastic injection to make casts before, or the machine shop for cnc machines. Or the tool and dye area.
Yeah. Futuretech may end up "magic blocks" in another 100years, but I'd like to see you go big.

MULTIBLOCKS!!! All the multi blocks!(lol google doesn't think multi is a word) Make it realistic and require huge setups. I would definitely use this mod rather than those little "magic" boxes.

I would definetly like to see an automining solution to replace the overused quarry. Something that will slowly mine a large area, but be visible while doing it (i.e. not a "laser"). Maybe a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bucket-wheel_excavator
Something where you can start out with one excavator relatively early, that will slowly mine an area but be unable to go very deep. Then you could upgrade that system with more/larger excavators and conveyor belts to allow the digging to go faster and deeper.

What i DON'T want is a one size fits all ore processing pipeline.

Take some inspiration from people who have worked at foundries, do some research. But copper, tin, iron, aluminium, silver lead and gold are NOT all processed the same way.
The creation of alloys, likewise, is not the same. Some (like bronze) are made by first smelting the source metals and mixing the liquids. Others (I guess) can be made by grinding a mix, that is then smelted.

Chiming in on multiblocks. I can imagine a huge, multiblock furnace requring a stupid amount of power and time to get running, but its roaring flames would provide usefulness in spades for players knowing to take advantage of it. Not only for smelting ores or dust, but it could be a fun way to execute a mob trap or other traps. Its heat capacity would be dependant on its size, from 3x3x3 (short time to start up, short time to cool down) to cathedral-like structures eating stacks of coal just getting to the right temperature, but they'd stay hot for days after you stopped powering them. Perhaps wall thickness could be a parameter too. And how cool wouldn't it be to convert your throne room into a furnace, to make a trap for unsuspecting visitors? Slam the doors shut and fire up the heaters to rapidly send the temperature in there to griefer-frying levels.

Likewise, cold storage or freezers would cool things down or freeze them solid in their tracks.

Other conveyor belts or large assembly lines could also be cool. Late-game, tokamak fusion reactors could be a way to generate power. Giant blocks (containers?) provide plenty of storage. Perhaps there could even be huge machines making usefulness out of random junk quarried into it.

As much as I want to agree with "BIG OMG BIGGUR!", I have to throw the cautionary voice with "please make sure it'll fit in a "normal" base". I don't want to have to build a 9x9 chunk structure to process my first piece of iron...that's not a feasibly fun way to go about things. Big multiblocks ARE cool, just show some restraint in HOW big you want to make them, especially if you take the above suggestion to have a different machine for every ore (as an aside, I don't think that'd be a good idea, what with all the ores in FTB...).

Overall, I like the idea; would be a nice change from the "magic boxes" that have become prevalent in today's modded Minecraft. Just make sure they fit in to a reasonable size and scheme so that the average user feels that using them wouldn't be a huge mistake over their easily automated, GUI-friendly, 1-block wondercubes. You'll certainly appeal to the extreme builders with this mod, but try not to lose sight of the common man =)

(p.s. keep working, there's real potential here!)

Redius has a good point. Don't make things too stupidly big and overpowered, but make sure that things are balanced enough that they're fun to interact with and use. :) Sounds like an awesome mod, can't wait for it to be made. Will definitely try out once it comes out.

Multiblock refinery, multiblock blast furnaces for massive steel production(at least 9x9x15),multiblock multifunctional computers.

I think scalability would be a key factor. You could make the machines 3x3x3 or 10x10x10, or anything in between, it would accomplish the same task, but the speed of the process, and the amount of fuel required to run it, would be different. A huge, house-sized blast furnace with an accordingly big air supply fan would spit out steel at a rate of stacks per minute, whereas a humble, fits-in-your-basement model would process an ingot every now and then. The upside with the little version is that it would require less fuel and startup time, whereas the big one would need a dedicated tree farm/charcoal smeltery, and run for days before reaching its final temperature. Heating components and insulation could be added to speed up the process or reduce the cooldown rate. I also suggest that fuel would only be used to raise/maintain temperature, and the processing time would be affected by temperature only, not fuel input (though fuel affects temperature, so there is a link).

The problem with multiblocks, though, will always be that they are resource demanding. At all times, the game needs to check for completed structures, and when hundreds of blocks work together to form a structure (of which your base might contain a few), your processor might be tempted to ragequit and crash the game.

A possible approach to this problem would be doing it bed-style. The Vanilla bed takes up two blocks of space, yet is placed and picked up as a single block. It would possibly reduce lag, but leave out a lot of flexibility. Custom incineration chambers would be out of the picture. There would also be a question of how to assemble it. Would you combine its components in the GUI of an assembly block? Build the thing on a huge construction pad (a flat multiblock in the traditional sense), where it drops as an item after completion? Or something else entirely?

Either way, I look forward to seeing how you'll handle it. Best of wishes!

An idea: maybe have tiers? 3x3, 5x5, 7x7, etc. As you progress, it runs faster as well as using less fuel. So rather than 8 coal to finish a stack of an item, it would instead take 6 for the 3x3, 4 for the 5x5, and only 2 for the 7x7. And to stop people from skipping the earlier tiers is having a required metal to be smelted in the previous furnace. That would be a really good balancing option imo.

Edit: ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!? Ninja'd...and not even on an obvious answer, just a creative suggestion...

I'd like to have something similar as well. A solution in the middle of both seems like a good approach. Most of the current mods just say "Stick ore in here and retrieve ingot/dust after a short time".
Having to build different processing lanes for different ores would be fresh air for me. You could limit it to groups of ores which are processed in a similar manner.
