I think I'm going to do something completely crazy...

I'm in the same boat. I really don't use even half of the mods in the pack I'm using. I'm hesistant to use "Lite" packs because they're usually more bare than suits my needs and I'm not used to adding mods. But whittling a big pack down has been easier for me. Rip them out, its not crazy. If you feel confident without those mods, its not worth the strain on your system (if there is any).

The open blocks tank is a reasonable substitute for for the BC thermometers, as are the TE portable tanks. For real volume in a temporary set-up, a stack of drums (also open blocks? extraUtilities) are nice. The lite packs always seem to have the big mods I don't want while leaving out my must-haves.

I actually have added SGCraft (adds stargates), ArchimedesShips (adds large platform flying & sailing capability), EnchantingPlus (easy to choose your enchants), Sync (clone body swapping anywhere except the end), and Big Reactors (larger scale RF production).

What I'm looking for in additional mods are narrow focus, cool or especially useful features, minimal world gen with a clear use for everything, a relatively simple & straightforward tech tree. I'm looking at atomic science (particle colliders! Antimater!, & MFFS belongs in a pack with Stargates and might require more power if I ever get around to using it).

1) Drum is extraUtilities
2)That missing parentheses is bugging me like crazy! :p

Disabling mods that you don't find that you use much off is definitely not craze.
I got tired of the mods that were there for me, and didn't really feel that any of the packs fitted my needs. Took the Dw20 pack as a base, removed all the mods that I don't use, and added some that I wanted to play with (Big Reactors, Witchery, Rotarycraft etc)

All of a sudden I am playing with all the mods i wish to, but couldn't before due to my PC. In total, i have just about the same amount of mods, but removing some of the bigger ones, really did my system a favour.

(Also using the pack via MMC, seems to have boosted my FPS by a decent amount, but that might be pure coincidence.)

I only use the pipe part of BC because i like the looks of them.
Also if im right RC needs BC and i need my steam boiler n coal coke ;_;

(Tbh i removed alot of mods of monster which i don't use to give the server less pressure)

Stargate mod is excellent, but try updating to LanteaCraft (I think that's what it's called). It takes the Stargate mod and improves the code, textures, models and for people that use CC, adds ways to interact via code. On servers, stargates are a great alternative to mod portals. Server admin can build stargates in the other dimenisions, disable their portals from being crafted, then all dimension access is via stargate.

You might want to add in Mekanism to "replace" IC2. Works nicely hand in hand with TE3, and is a very well designed mod.

Archimedes ships is something fun to play with for a while, but does make exploring the world very easy/quick, allowing you to bypass any "survival" type gameplay. Removed it from my server due to that, and some buggy behaviour.

So far all the youtube spotlights for LanteaCraft are either in Russian or spanish (I had the same problem trying to find info on some of the mods in Horizons when it came out), but the description sounds like it has some good improvements, so I'll give it a try.

I still like Buildcraft because of Logistics Pipes. I've never really been a fan of forestry. Also, does another mod have a floodgate equivalent?

It's pretty much the same as SGCraft, just more optimised, better models/textures, CC support. I think they are planning on making a true stargate that is larger, more chevrons (so longer distance transport is an option) and needs a power source.

Whichever one adds support for powering them without Naquada first wins in my books, and technically that has been done in Stargate Tech 2, which is currently in alpha, but has support for Open Computers to boot.
I'd be using it right now if I knew which mod was glitching my textures in it(and MFR's Milk).

computercraft is always a good edition lol but I see where you're coming from. I have a strange urge to test new waters. Even though 1.5 and 1.6 brought a lot of changes that kept me entertained over the past 4 months I want to try new stuff out. Thaumcraft was a lot of fun to delve into but there's still that build it bigger/work out the logistics void I need to fill. EnderIO, extra utilities, open blocks, thaumcraft, and rotary/reactor craft would be a fun pack. For sorting something like logistics pipes would be good. While you can do some powerful and clever things with applied energistics it usually ends up making me lazy rather than clever.

I wouldn't say this is crazy, I'd say it's pretty smart actually.

ShneekeyCraft for 1.7.x is not going to contain BC, Forestry, or Railcraft. It will be depending on Thermal Expansion, MFR, and Mekanism for just about everything those mods provided. It is going to be a 100% Redstone Flux powered mod, now that the latest build of Mekanism natively runs on RF. Kind of a minimalist mod pack, as usual, but some people do seem to enjoy it.

Hmmm for me I'm not willing to let go of BC and RC because in the end I still want big steam engine output while still being minimalist and rails to study maybe traincraft is a good start as well if it isnt as buggy as it used to be BC for the machines... Honestly I like where BC5 is heading in 1.7.x call it silly but I also like RC's processing plant and maybe add in BR or AS into the mix
