Hey all o/

So I'm learning bees. I was fortunate enough (or so I thought) to happen across a Pristine Cultivated/Noble Hybrid princess! I turned her into a Queen using I believe a Cultivated drone, at any rate after letting her live in an Apiary she left behind a Common/Cultivated Pristine princess.

What?

Bees are complicated, I am confused and I have spent the better part of eight hours stuck at Cultivated bees. I really have no idea what I'm doing, despite reading wikis, guides and watching videos. :(

Cultivated-Cultivated, I believe. I honestly.. don't remember. I did have at least one Cultivated-Cultivated drone.

edit: wait, nope. It was Cultivated-Normal because a wiki said Cultivated + Normal = Noble.

Okay! Okay!

I got a new one - Cultivated/Noble (Ignoble.) What do I need to do to get a Noble Princess? (or am I doing this wrong?)

You can breed normally, and hope that you get at least one noble offspring. Save the offspring, and when you get another bee that is its corresponding pair, breed them. i.e. Find a noble/x drone, save it. Eventually get a noble/x princess, then breed the two. This will give you your best chance, but will take a while.

Otherwise, you'll have to keep gambling and breed your commons/cultivated together. This is why it is essential that you have multiple mutating pairs, so you might get multiple instances of the mutation you want.

i.e. If you breed 10 pairs of cultivated + common, you could end up with at LEAST one noble/x drone and one noble/x princess.

Technically you're doing it wrong since that's a ignoble princess(aka gonna die eventually without leaving a princess).
That said, it's simple stuff, honestly. Just know that Bee(/tree/butterfly) Breeding in Forestry is based upon the Mendel System of Inheritance(aka Mendel Genetics), and know what you want, what you have, what mutations could occur with what you're breeding... and it's all punnet squares from there.

Well stuff has changed and there is no documentation anywhere as to how the new system works. I read a reddit post but it was confusing and assumed the reader already had some idea of how Forestry works.

So I'm starting from ground zero with no knowledge. :( I really don't know what I'm doing, I don't understand the importance of drones or princesses, etc. A small walkthrough for the first few few steps would help me a lot so I can move forward without guessing.

edit: Why do some drones stack and what is the importance of them being able to stack?

Install Gendustry. Many people say that it was way too overpowered, but from my point of view, it only reduces frustration and saves time.
Search "Gendustry ftb" in google.

Tartarus.. I mean at work. Same thing really.
Normal?
(I'm guessing Common here; unless something got renamed)

Also what drones did you get?

Cultivated, Common [and most of the hive types] are dominant traits [red text in the beealyzer]
Noble [and most the mutations from Cultivated] are recessive traits [blue text]

A dominant trait will always take the primary [first/visible] name, and a recessive will take the second.
[both dominant or both recessive is 50-50 which one gets the first slot]
To try and get a pure bee type- you'll want both a drone and princess with the desired type.
[Excel or Google spreadsheets are kinda useful here]

If you use any drone- its a 50% chance to loose the noble trait, 50% for a impure noble trait. (this is what you did the first time)
Use an impure noble drone- 25% chance to loose the noble trait, 50% impure noble, 25% pure noble
Use a pure noble drone- 50% for impure, 50% for pure. You'll never lose the trait.
This is per bee after the queen dies- so higher drone count=more chance for success.
Hopefully you'll have some [im]pure noble drone kicking about.

--Edit-- Drone stacking.

Drones stack together when they're fully identical. (same fertility/speed ect).
If you have an automated apiary, and you see drones stacking up you know nothings going to change.
Very useful if you want more of a specific bee.

Okay, so if I have a Cultivated-Noble Princess, and breed her with a Cultivated-Cultivated drone... what would I get? Because the wiki says I need to combine a Normal with a Cultivated to get a Noble?

Or should I do Normal-Normal drone with Cultivated-Noble princess? :|

So what do you do with ignoble princesses? Dump them in the trash? I don't see anything wrong with using them to breed up a bunch of noble/noble drones and then using those to convert a random wild pristine princess into noble/noble. In fact, isn't that the perfect use of ignobles, to use them as experimental breeding stock?

You know that "Trusted User" tag on your avatar, may I ask why there is two tags?

I GET IT NOW

I now have 6 Pristine Cult-Cult all producing wonderful cult drones for me while I throw my head back and laugh ;D Bees are the PERFECT BALANCE of effort and time wrapped into one. I am truly enjoying Minecraft right now! I feel like they're vanilla farming 2.0 -- but can't be rushed. Bees guys. Bees.

Oh and PS: I just got my first Unwavering-Diligent Pristine Princess and matching drone! OMG :D
