I haven't seen you in a while either! I see most people have sort of...left FTB, and are now just playing around with mods that they added that's sorta in the "FTB way". This is why this private pack thing really needs to get working. There's so much fragmentation now, but it's cooler, since I learn about more and more mods, instead of everyone saying "I run Direwolf with Optifine", I can see all the mods...and add all the mods!

Indeed I did take a bit of a break. Thanks for noticing :)

I completely forgot about 1.5's better performance. I've never seen Stargates, and what is that new mining dimension mod? I'd probably like it as I'm not much of a world resetter. With something easier to write than Mystcraft, I'd be golden!

Yeah, just disabled optifine as it's doing odd things with NEI in my mod pack I'm knocking up, as FPS was perfectly fine with a 64x texure pack. Just need to work out a way of having CTM and random mobs. Last time I tried MCPatcher with a modded minecraft, things didn't go well :D Hope forge will add CTM and random mobs support.

Mining Dimension Mod:
http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1679684-forge-152-aroma1997s-mods/

simple to craft portal, will create a single biome flat world that's eternal day, no weather, no mobs, no buildcraft oil, no trees and will generate all normal ores. If a mod adds weird biome specific resource generation, then this mod won't pick it up.
I actually combined this mod with the Ruins mod by AtomicStrkyer, and added chance of mini volcano and ore outcroppings to spawn as "ruins". Mod as a config file to turn on mobs, some generation options (like lakes and lava).
Seems to do what it says on the tin, it gives you a mining age. I've yet to fully test it with all the mods I'm using (TC3, AE, TE, Forestry, etc).

Stargate mod:
http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1676966-gregs-sg-craft-for-minecraft-151-152/

Allows you to build stargates, adds rare naquada ore. Stargate component pieces can be found as dungeon loot, and there is a NPC villager. Quite heavy on resources (especially for vanilla) and would definitely be something of a mid/endgame build.
Oh, plus it spins and does all the wormhole blast thing. Connections will not remain open, costs fuel to run.
Config file allows you to adjust the behaviour of the stargate, for example, two way travel is default, but it can be set to one way.

Only down side is that you need to make a note of all the gate addresses which you key in, and it takes a moment to spin up when connecting. It works across dimensions. I built one in the Mining Dimension world and travelled back to the overworld just fine.

I'm purposely excluding Mystcraft (just not keen on the direction the mod is heading, it's not so fun anymore) and portalgun mod, but wanted something that offered a mining age and portal system. These two small gems seem to fit the role nicely.

Oh yeah. I used those to make a ton of smooth stone for my current build ever so handy.

It doesn't seem to me like you plan out your builds much. Like Shoop Corp Orbital, you spent all this time making gold, and then used strips, but it was laggy, and then you used the wand to turn it into blocks, and then that led to mobs, and then it looked to golden, so you replaced some with basalt pavers and hid lights in them. But have you ever come across a problem that could have been avoided/you couldn't fix without huge changes in your base?

Well those just blew Portal Gun and Mystcraft out of the water, I hope that mining age is a little bit more customizable, it's not flatland flat, but more plains flat from what I figure, which isn't bad at all, though the writing about the mod itself wasn't very good. At least some screenshots for crafting recipes, right?
But it's still better than mystcraft, and I don't like where it's headed either. Portalgun I'll keep, but Stargate sounds so much cooler, and the portal guns will just be used for in-base transportation. Since I'm lazy and all.

I don't notice someone while they're gone, but when they come back: "oh, I haven't seen you in a while!"

Actually I do plan things out most of the time. The covers worked in small scale testing. But I do often change things as I build. I added the pavers and lights not because of mobs. I disliked the look of solid gold floors. But I did have an issue with mods on top of the ship which I never got to correcting before my PC blew up.

And Yes all the time mostly from when I add machines to my bases or expand some automation line or the such. Check my show us your base thread my volcano base had issues like that. I had to expand my thermopile which made me dig down into my base. I had issues with my under water bees that I had to add glass columns to make work. The art in large MC builds is working around the mistakes or updates. If it becomes to huge a rebuild I just move. That was actually the reason I did the Shoop Corp Orbital build in the first place my volcano base was at the point I would have to completely rebuild it so I just up and moved.

Do you have any city builds anywhere? I'm making a city for my next FTB world with some friends but don't know what it should look like, and need some inspiration for it.

Try Shoop comes to Testificate (or something like that). It didn't go far before the super-grief of adeptcraft

I started one on Adpetcraft. Then they blew up the server.

It is a flatland, no hills at all. These screenshots show it. I've enabled lakes. Screenshots also include TC3 worldgen (Barrows, Trees) plus lots of bee hives from Magic Bees and occasional flowers from Natura, and also rocky outcrops and lava vents from another mod. My testing has all the TE and TC3 ores being generated.

Did have some problems generating the portals today to this mining world, which seemed to fix itself after a while. Bit odd. Also finding that Rocky Bee Hives are dropping Forest Bees for some reason. Not sure if it's just this dimension, a config error, or some bug.

I'm now also thinking of including Portal gun mod, purely for the intra base portals.

New things. New things new things new things newthingsnewthingsnewthingsnewthings.
This is also why I gave up on modpacks; surely having everything set for you is nice but I just can't resist keeping everything up to date. Not that such a thing is hard to do on FTB's launcher, but still.
